Am I right in thinking that we don't see as many goals scored by diving headers as we used to. Andy Gray, Alan Clarke, Osgood, Law, Keegan, Francis Lee, seemed to be scoring this way all the time.

Are modern strickers too scared. Is it because their alice band might fall off. Are defenders better at getting in first. Maybe I am not watching enough football (only every day) and you lot will provide loads of examples where players put their heads in where it hurts!

What do you think?

i think you make a very good point... what did become of the diving header? Andy Gray used to head anything more than 6 inches off the ground...

and who were the great Albion diving headerers?

Malcolm Poskett, Teddy Maybank, Michael Robinson, Terry Connor...?

the most famous diving header of all time?

Keith Houchen for Bov. in the 1987 Cup Final...

This may have been influenced by Lineker. Who proved that you don't need to score with your head to be prolifict in front of goal. It's more about being in the right place at the right time and beating your marker.

A goal I saw from about 20-30 yards away - very arguably the last great cup final. Didn't support Cov at the time or anything, just had a ticket for the game, happily in the Cov end.

Johnny Byrne's diving header at Liverpool, FA Cup 4th Round, January 1991.

Football genius hoofs a long cross beyond the far post, Mickey Small jumps above three defenders to nod it back across to the spot, Byrne appears from nowhere to head into the roof of the net in front of the 7,000 delirious Albion fans.

Happy, happy days

I think Micky Thomas scored one of his few goals for us with a diving header against Barnet in a cup relay.

I was very unhappily in the Coventry end.

Even Sir Trevor Brooking hardly the bravest footballer scored against those gooners with a diving flick off the head.

Maybe it is because of less wing play so lack of crosses from the byline.

GNW fell over this weekend. Our first clear cut chance, he ran in to the box with the ball and some how 'collapsed'. I was nearby and thought 'He's gonna be just another McCammon'
