McNulty began at Liverpool in the academy setup before signing for rivals Everton. McNulty then signed for Wrexham after being released. After several years at Wrexham, he became their reserve team captain. However, he made only one senior appearance for the team as a substitute for Steve Roberts against Stockport County in the LDV Vans Trophy on 5 November 2003; Wrexham lost the game in a 5–4 defeat. In February and March 2004, after leaving Wrexham, McNulty spent five matches at Bangor City in the League of Wales. He joined another League of Wales side, Caernarfon Town, in summer 2004. He made 63 appearances for the club over two seasons, scoring twice, whilst also reaching the position of captain.

In July 2006 McNulty signed for League Two club Macclesfield Town. On 21 November 2006 his first goal for the club sealed a 1–0 win in a FA Cup 1st Round replay against Walsall at the Bescot Stadium. On 29 November 2006 it was announced that McNulty had broken his leg and would be out of action for several months.

On 2 January 2008 McNulty signed an eighteen month contract with fellow League Two side Stockport County, after rejecting a new contract at Macclesfield. McNulty scored his first Stockport goal at Leyton Orient on 13 September 2008. He played as a central defender for Stockport as they won promotion with a 3-2 play-off victory over Rochdale at Wembley

McNulty is VERY good and we won't sign him. He's very highly thought of and to be honest, I would expect him to go to a top half Championship team, not a bottom half League 1 team.

As for the other midfielder...Thierry Racon anyone? I don't know any inside info, but someone mentioned it this morning and it seems a good shout especially with Charlton languishing at the bottom of the Championship?

Racon played for us last season!

He broke his leg in September at Charlton.

I can't help thinking this is another 'We are bidding for a player we have no hope of signing' type story.

Why would he leave Stockport (who are better than us) and his native North West to join a relegation scrap at the other end of the country?

And I really HATE the way Dick comes out and goes on about how "I" have bids in for players etc but is nowhere to be seen when things are going wrong.

What you said about McNulty surely applies to Racon? Championship class, not bottom of League One.

Would be a nice one,two though if Dick can pull it off. :)

The following, coming from a Stockport County press release earlier this month, may answer your question.

"Stockport County's success this season, under the guidance of Jim Gannon and his group of elite young players, building on the remarkable achievements of the past two years, have inevitably led to much speculation about the future..........................

And if serious offers are made, which are in the best interests of the player and the club, then these offers will be accepted; like any other club we have to balance our ambition with the financial reality of our existence.

........................"

It seems that their shareholders are unwilling/unable to stump up enough money every year to keep the club running. In case you were unaware, the annual loss reported in the last set of the Albion's published accounts (2006/7) was £2.8M.
