When I worked in Alderly Edge , Cheshire, used to see a lot of Man Ure players out and about.

Sitting in the pub at lunch having a beer or two and in walks David Beckham (about 2 years ago with his agent.)

Another day, walked into Brassigamens (sp never did learn to spell it) next door to my office, and David Platt is sitting there. Had to have a conversation quite loud about how Zamora was only good through the middle (this was when he was just making the U21's) ,walked past Noddy Holder (c list) on my way out to the sandwich shop where I literally bumped into Peter Schmicheal (I'm bad with spelling today). Big bloke.

Dwight Yorke on a night out in afore mentioned place.

And finally in Brighton on the Pier in late summer of 86 I saw the ledgend that was Darren Hughes having his photo taken in a bric-a-brac shop. That one was strange.... Anybody else remember Mr Hughes ?

This story offers a good indication of how football has changed in financial terms since the Seventies:
Even more if you go back further.

When I was at primary school in Newport, I remember playing football against the other school down the road. The game was refereed by one of their teachers, a bloke called Mervyn Griffiths.

He'd only been a linesman in the 1954 World Cup Final and had refereed a couple of games at the 1958 tournament.

I can't imagine Collina (or even Graham Poll) turning out on a Saturday morning to take charge of an under-11s game.

Back in early 2000 I was returning home after a Tuesday night out in Brannigans, THE place to go for a Tuesday night out in Stoke-on-Trent if you're a student. As was the custom at the time I got the taxi driver to drop me off at Zarka's kebab house on Stoke Road. I bought myself a large doner and was staggering back home when I bumped into a group of people leaving the curry house next door.
"Seagulls!" cried one fella, which rather threw me as I wasn't wearing any Albion stuff and i'd never met this bloke before. He seemed to know me as he asked "you support Brighton don't you?". I replied yes, so he then pointed out another bloke in his party and said "well that's Darragh Ryan". Blow me if it wasn't Gerry Ryan's boy standing in front of me! A few minutes of drunken conversation followed before I staggered off home wondering "did that really happen?"
