The season can't be right as Everton won the league in 1970. Panathinaikos reached the European Cup Final in 1970/71 so if it was true it was the season before. I've never heard of Everton reaching that stage in the European Cup though,

You are indeed wrong, but not far off. They lost to Panathinaikos on away goals in the quarter-finals in 1970/71.
