why, in general, are football commentators made up of completely AVERAGE ex-players?

in cricket they use complete LEGENDS of the game to commentate, i generally trust that, for example, shane warne knows what he's going on about when talking about spinners etc.

is, for example, andy townsend REALLY qualified to criticise, for example, cristiano ronaldo's performance

Er, yes you can. If you actually listen to a lot of what he says, he doesn't say much and quite often, if you listen for a while, you will realise that he contradicts things he has already said.
