Hi folks

My mrs has a Peugeot 206 52 reg with around 50k ish on the clock.

We have been told that the cam belt needs replacing soon

Is this correct? I assume this is standard on cars of this age?

How much should I expect to pay?

Many thanks.

Cambelts are usually needed after around 60k miles but this is dependant on the car. Cost depends on how easy it is to get at the cambelt. At an authorised dealer you'll pay a lot more as most of the cost is in the labour. A cambelt is relatively cheap at about £25 or something but you'll be looking at between £200-£300 in labour at a garage I would have thought.

Take it to Rapid Auto Centre, North Street, Portslade, 01273 413030. Gary Stevens (Gusset) runs the place, friend of the Albion, sponsors Vicentes shirt. You'll get a really good deal, and reliable too, tell him Phil, sent you. (pretty sure you've met him anyway at games with us)

Check your service book, it will tell you when the cambelt should be changed. Make sure you change it. It'll be money well spent because if it goes bang (and they frequently do) you will be looking at scrapping the car in most cases.

Time and distance varies on every car, cost wise would also vary, if you do need help let me know

Needless to say, avoid Becks Peugeot who'll charge an arm and a leg to cover 'overheads'.

Give Blundells Garage a call. Independent Peugeot specialists with over 25 years experience, that don't charge an upper and lower limb. They're in the book and located off Portland Road

This is the place to go (even though they are not sponsoring Vicente this season !)

Petrol or diesel or am I being dim and haven't read the post properly? Petrol engine probably overdue if it's it's first belt change but diesel's not due until100.000 miles or 10,years WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST.

Not the real one
All depends on the car. Example regular Petrol Ford Focus 60k miles or 5 years, Zetec engine 100k miles or 10 years. It is worth doing because your car will be wrecked if you don't get it changed and the thing snaps.
Having said that the sensible person buys a BMW or Merc that have chain belts that don't need replacing. You can get great 7-5yr old cars for 6-8k that will run and run if they have been looked after.

Also
Learn to do oil changes and basic services yourself. Saves you an awful lot of money (yes I understand you wouldnt if still under warranty).
