I find that very hard to believe that would have suceeded in a court of law as there is a + or - 2% margin on the devices the police use.

I assume he appealed against the fine and points?

If not, I suggest he does

It happened years ago after Charlton away (at Upton Park when Nelse scored for them after about 10 seconds)

Of course, he later found out from some legal expert friend of his that it would never stand up so of course he should have appealed. However, he was miles from home so couldn't be arsed for the sake of a 30 quid fine. We reckon the police had quotas to fill and t must have been near the end of the month or something. It was funny when it happened though. How we laughed in the back of the car. :lolol:

Oh dear,

THEY ARE NOT A SEPERATE RACE! THEY ARE PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME LIVING IN CARAVANS ON OTHER PEOPLES LANE, NOT PAYING TAXES AND LEAVING BEHIND HUGE AMOUNTS OF CRAP!!

THAT IS WHY THEY GET ABUSE! I DON'T CARE IF SOMEONE IS BLACK< WHITE YELLOW OR PURPLE! IF YOU AVOID TAX, SQUAT ON LAND YOU DO NOT OWN AND MAKE PEOPLES LIVES A MISERY YOU WILL GET ABUSE!

In my view is is the totally over PC people that are truely 'racisit' I don't see race, I see people. If a person annoys me they will get abuse. It takes someone who is PC to come and tell me I'm being racisit, when the thought hadn't even crossed my mind!

There were a band of PC people who were saying that Ali G was racist. I spoke to a black friend to get his opinion and he thougth it was utter bollocks!

I find it totally racist that you have to declare you ethnic origin on job applications so that we can be 'fair'. How is it fair? Why is at LAW that you MUST employ a certain percentage of ethinic minorities? Does that mean if you have too many you must sack them as you don't have enough ethnic majorities?

Utter Utter bollocks. Everyone is equal, every one should be able to compete on an even playing ground regardless of their race. If a group of villagers are being plaged by a group of totally anti-social people (regardless of 'race') then they are within their right to display their displeasure at this, providing it is peacefull demonstration, without the law getting involved. If the press weren't there then no one would give a toss! People don't understand that is no one turned up to watch lewes bonfire it would still happen!

Now that is communism, a totally different argument altogether!

I agree that 'people are people' and should not be judged by skin, race or what football club they support.

Its so very easy to hide behind the Racism argument all the time, its a classic way for the person being persecuted to wriggle out of there moral responsiblity, claiming that the abuser is being 'racist' in order to deflect the arguement away from what actually caused the person to say something in the first place.

This thread is a classic case of just that, we have talked more about wheter what the Firle residents did was racist rather than what acutally made them make their point in the first place.

That's because the title of the thread was asking if what they did wa racist. Hence the bit on the end saying 'racist?' :shootself

Also what I said is not communism as I used the word 'compete'.

Are you sure? I know that White Irish is a different ethnic group from White under UK law, but I thought that was more to do with oppression of the Irish on the British mainland - even in the 1960s it wasn't uncommon to see B&Bs with the sign "No blacks or Irish" scribbled on a sign in the window.

I've never seen "Irish Traveller" marked as a seperate ethnic group on a job application form.

Yes absolutely sure.

Romanies/Roma have been recognised as a distinct ethnic group since the late 1980's

It is NOT the law that employers have to employ a certain number of ethnic minority staff, in fact (except in some very specific cases called Genuine Occupational Qualifications)) it is illegal to select on the basis of race or sex.

Local Authorities have a legal duty to promote good race relations and have to carry out monitoring under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act. Most Authorities also wish to be representative of the communities they serve.

Good (non LA) employers also carry out monitoring to evaluate the effect of their statutory and organisational obligations.

So if I buy a caravan then I'm a Romanie/Roma? Or am I an Englishman with a caravan squatting on someones land making a mess and not paying tax?

AFAIK the number of Protestants burned under Mary was around 250. The number of Catholics burned under Elizabeth was 0. So I don't consider the two sides equal here. The events of the 16th century certain did create martyrs to religion - they weren't fighting for political freedom.

The Catholic regimes of the times you mention were all violent absolute monarchies. The government of Britain was a (partial) parliamentary democracy by the late 1600s, and to a certain extent was even earlier. I'm surprised to see you support the forces of reaction against the (more) enlightened view of the English.

Obviously things went a little too far at times in the 1640s and 1650s, but you seem to have far too much sympathy with the absolutist regimes in the 16th to 18th centuries.

When did I say that I supported the catholic regimes? What I said was that, on occasion, the catholics were oppressed and on occasion the protestants were. Your choice of Elizabeth's regime is highly disingenuous - try thinking about Henry VIII's regime, instead. Or James I's, for that matter (the gunpowder plotters, for instance)

As for the 17th state being a partial parliamentary democracy - you've been reading too many liberal and marxist historians if you believe that to be true!

Still waiting for your reading list, by the way. PM me with it, if you like. But, given your understanding of the 17th century, I think I can guess - SR Gardiner by any chance?

Oh dear. 'It's your own fault if you get racist abuse - you should stay in your own country.' What a statement. :nono:

What utter bollocks and patronising bollocks too.
"oooh - that's racist..." you sound like David Brent.

Persecuting somebody for no reason other than the fact that they are different either in terms of appearance or values etc might be racist; but telling somebody to f*** off because they are taking the piss isn't.

I think what a lot of people don't understand is that it is not just persecuting somebody that makes them racist, it is the whole act of treating someone differently because of their race.

For example that Asian lad in the police who was rushed through selection purely because of the colour of his skin is utterly racist. Everyone standing up for Gypos who have commited unsocaiable acts because they are a different 'race' and thus have the right to get away with what others can't is totally racist.

..... And people ask me why I moved away from Lewes 20 years ago!!!!

Thank God (Steve Foster My Lord!!) I'm an athiest and dialectical materialist... and don't get embroiled with all this religious bigotry stuff. I didn't actually realise, until I was about 19 what all the "fuss" was about... burning the Pope .. King Billy of Orange. I just thought Nov 5th in Lewes was an excuse for a night out on the Special Brew.. it was for us in the Lewes Rebel Army!!

Fat Badger... Socialist Worker??? Tee Hee.... I don't think so! Eh Mark?

I've learned so much about my home town and it's history as part of this thread... Badger, you're a mine of information... Internet or Stirling Uni library/archives... or just 'cos you're such a smart, well-read guy? But I think it's time to chill.

No place for Racism or bigotry in BHAlba

PS. Dandyman ... thanks for the Lewes bonfire photos.
