Fire works ?

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
After someone I know's bone in their leg was shattered at Lewes last year by some idiot throwing a banger - I cant say I will ever go to Lewes.

Too many idiots have ruined it nowadays.

People have been killed at football matches. The likelihood of getting injured at Lewes on Nov 5th is minimal, although if you know someone personally. then it is much closer to home.

Why celebrate a terrorist ?

How is it celebrating a terrorist? It's celebrating the failure of a terrorist plot to destroy the Government and the king of this country - surely it's failure is something that's worth celebrating??

This programme demonstrates what would have happened to the houses of Parliament had the plot suceeded.

And there you have answered your own question. People make a shed load of cash out of them. Years ago it was all centred around one week of the year, inclusive of the two Saturday's nearest the 5th. Now around here they have had displays as early as the 28th of October and I know of one planned for the last Saturday in November. Worlds gone crazy.

Actually there have been displays away from the 5th for decades

Here is a list for bonfires and carnivals in 2012 but most have been holding events for a very long time but most don't hold events on the fifth because they can't compete with Lewes.

The events raise money for local charities and other good causes

For example, Uckfield Bonfire and Carnival Society collected a massive £3708 for local charities at this years Carinval. (http://www.uckfieldcarnival.co.uk/)

Under the Police Box
Growing up with a brother who's birthday was in late November and a Gran who worked for Standard Fireworks in Yorkshire, I was de-sensitised to them from an early age. Still love a bonfire (the smell & sight appeal to the inner-pyromaniac in me), but completely unimpressed by fireworks because we had crateloads of them, virtually for free for my brother's birthday every year!
