In the past jobs lost to tech have been replaced by more jobs elsewhere. It has been argued were approaching a time where this won't happen.

by those overlooking the previous form for such predictions. there's no reason to suggest the same wont occur again, with un-imagined or existing jobs becoming available in greater numbers in the future.

Cameron would rather give it to foreigners than us as he isn't fussed about hardship for the poorer classes.

Nonsense. Cameron is very focused on hardship for the poorer classes; he's devoted this term to stitching up the poor at the expense of his mates

Have I missed something? Has Sami Hyypia been sacked by FC Zurich and appointed Chancellor of Finland?

Something like this is going to have to happen in the UK. As automation takes over more and more jobs, there simply won't be enough employment for everyone to have a job if they want to or not. It's not going to be long before all taxi drivers, lorry drivers etc are replaced by automated cars. That's maybe 1,000,000 jobs gone? Then the knock on effect of automated cars. Why stay in a hotel when you can just get into an automated car, tell it to take you 8 hours away and have a sleep? So, there are less people needed in hotels.
Agree that we are moving in this direction. There will be fewer jobs so something will need to be done. Solution, population reduction? No you need customers to make money, so the Finnish idea is an idea that is likely to grow. Scandinavia is often ahead in problem solving, noticed that in my time there.

Wouldn't happen in Germany

Well, obviously that wouldn't work out well with current cars, but for future ones that don't need a driver, then they are obviously going to make ones that have a proper bed as lots of people will be doing this.

People don't only stay in hotels overnight because they are too tired to drive ...

800 euros is a nice chunk of state hand out cash if you already have a job.

If you are unlucky enough to find yourself out of work in Helsinki and there are no benefits at all would you be able to afford food after rent and utilities?

If the number of jobs hasn't decreased in the last 10,20,30 years or any decade you want to look at then where is the evidence that they will now suddenly decrease over the coming decades?

The number of full time employee jobs has increased by 900,000 over the last 5 years, add in the 250,000 increase in full time self employed and together with the increase in part-time jobs and you get a total of around 1.5 million new jobs.

Except that there's plenty of backing for this from conservative economists: see here, here and here

Even arch-conservative thinker Charles Murray has tinkered with the idea, although he hasn't quite got it right.

In fact, I'd say that it's an idea more associated with the right than the left - Switzerland is considering it and that's scarcely a Marxist state

I suspect the argument is, that no-one gets stuck in the benefits trap. It will force people to earn enough to support themselves, rather than rely on handouts over and above what everyone else gets.

WTF would the Daily Mail have to write about if this were to be adopted in the UK?

Thanks for the links, aren't they the exception though? I can't see how 'the right' would be in favour of this. It is the antithesis of everything they believe in.

but people sometimes through no fault of their own do find themselves in a no job trap, would 800 euros be enough for these people to survive on?

I really like this idea and will watch its development with hope. The removal of an extremely complex and often regressive welfare system needs sorting and i think this createsa simple link from basic living to imcentivising work. It can be self funding vs what we have now. The devil is in the detail on how the tax people who straddle the basic income level but thats detail. Congrats Fins, good work. Other to follow please, need lots of variations to find the one that works.
