This time though, he didn't pay and the rail company backed down "as a gesture of goodwill". Personally, I reckon it's because it didn't have a legal leg to stand on

Are away supporters who get an advance ticket to Falmer going to get fined if they decide to come back to Brighton on bus rather than wait for trains? And will any of them pay it?

I once got refused the use of the exit barrier at a London Underground station (Aldgate, if I remember rightly) because I was travelling on a national rail ticket from Sussex to somewhere in Essex. The ticket entitled me to travel across London by underground, but not to get off the underground anywhere other than at a station served by mainline trains.

All I wanted to do was fill in some time, by having a short walk in what passes for fresh air in central London. I had to resume my journey to Liverpool Street by underground.

But yes, I remember this being discussed a few weeks ago. I don't want to go into the rights and wrongs (again) of the ticket conditions but the railway company were wrong in the way they describe his actions: he didn't break, or attempt to break his journey or start from an intermediate station - he terminated his journey early. Not quite the same thing, and anyway even those who defended the railway company last time can't really think that a £155 penalty surcharge was fair?

Anyway I can see the reason behind the introduction of trains without toilets; think of all the juicy penalty charges that they can rake in ...


PS - Re another thread about people leaving Withdean early - maybe the club can copy the rail company? If you've paid to watch ninety minutes then you bloody well stay and watch ninety minutes. If you want to leave before the game's ended then you have to pay the value of your ticket in order to get out of the ground. Could be a nice little earner.

If you want to leave before the game's ended then you have to pay the value of your ticket in order to get out of the ground. Could be a nice little earner.

Brilliant idea. That would solve the problem once and for all.

Or perhaps, if the game's so poor that a certain percentage of people decide to leave, then the players have to pay for them to leave.

But then again, people go to watch a game that starts at a specific time ie 3pm or 7.45pm. Not 4 or 5 minutes late.

i often wonder what exactly paying first-class gets you these days, because it certainly isnt substantially improved seating on many lines. doesnt cut any ice with the ticket inspectors either it seems.

On the flip side to this getting fined by the toc's for ending your journey early, I'm just wondering if given the scenario of a driver forgetting to stop at a station and passengers having to go on to the next stop whether they can seek compensation to the same level that the toc's can fine people? Just a thought.

Ive been on a train that has skipped through PP before despote being a scheduled stop. Is it driver error or could there be another reason?

The plan is that one day there will be an Oyster card style system for B&H.
The smart cards are designed to support this I believe.

Perhaps that's what it says, but I'm not sure the railway staff pay that much attention.

I've used the travel voucher at about eleven o'clock at night after an afternoon game before (didn't even occur to me there was a time limit, mind you that might have been the alcohol impairing my thoughts), and the barrier staff just waved me through when I showed the match ticket.

I notice they're putting electronic barriers up at Burgess Hill at the moment, and have recently done so at Hassocks. On this note, Mid Sussex must be the tightest region in the country- we're already one of the only places where you have to input your car registration on pay and display tickets in the car parks so people don't go handing over tickets with time still on to newcomers

There can be genuine reasons for it but more often than not it's just the driver has forgotten to stop.

I suppose there's a twisted logic in that but at the same time it's not the sort of thing that will encourage people to use public transport. Very petty to put it mildly as no London Terminal has much to offer as an experience. I assume that you were on your way to Liverpool Street, not much to see there and nowhere that won't cost you to sit.

Your ticket is for one journey on London Underground, if you leave the system that journey is completed. I fell foul of the same thing although in my case they would not let me back in again without a new ticket.
