One of the things I felt while writing out the OP was that it shows, numbers wise, that marvel/comic book movies aren't as dominant as people think. Perhaps the issue is more with the marketing, and how for the first week or two, they have so many screens at the multiplex. But there are always other movies out at the same time that can be found with a bit of effort. I think that not enough people make the effort is part of the problem - if people made it clear they want an alternative, the cinemas and studioes would do more to get their money.
I have signed up to mubi (amazon channel version). Watched Aftersun last weekend and was rather underwhelmed by it.
This films seems to be a weird one. Or the response to it does. Before it was released it was seemingly being annointed as the next greatest movie ever made. It came out, didn't really explode, then the first time I heard anyone speak about it was a rant about self-aggrandising pap. Now it's winning awards. I'm not the biggest fan of spielberg's more recent films, so really struggling with whether to see it or not.
Perhaps so. I always find an alternative to the whizz bang movies. They have their place. I like a good action film. Just not Marvel superhero stuff.

From Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, to Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Empire looks forward to the best films of 2023.
Struggling myself but will see it. Ridiculous Spielberg has only won 2 best director Oscars so it could be 3 due to his body of work. Spielberg's peak for me was 1993-1996 with Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, with Jurassic Park thrown in for good measure. A master at the top of his form. The first 25 minutes of Saving Private Ryan is still considered by many the greatest section of film ever committed. The bar is so high with Spielberg his worst films are still better than most director's best films

Steve McQueen doesn’t make many films, but when he does, they are always worth watching. From Hunger and Shame through 12 Years A Slave and Widows, his filmography is a mightily impressive run of an eclectic range of stories.
His next film in Blitz. The plot is under wraps, all we know is that it will concern the plight of people during the Blitz in World War II.
Saoirse Ronan will headline the film, alongside Kathy Burke, Harris Dickinson, Erin Kellyman, Stephen Graham and, most intriguingly, Sir Paul Weller in his film debut (presumably there will be a scene during Blitz where people will be Down In The Tube Station At Midnight).
Should be fantastic!

Meh. Some okay scenes but all a bit obvious. Not nearly as clever as it thinks it is.
Too many half explored plot points and 6th form sociology observations for my tastes.

Watched “Good luck to you Leo Grande” last night.
Emma Thompson playing an uptight widower who hires a male escort as she is wondering what she missed out all these years.
What could have been a bit cringey is actually beautifully acted and was funny and moving in equal measur.
Both leads nominated for BAFTAs I believe. 7/10

You seem to not like an awful lot of films?
I have an odeon limitless subscription which I used to make use of at least twice a week. Now I barely bother with it.
It’s a shame but yeah, I don’t like that many films these days.
