seems to me sussex police, for the last couple of months, have been siting these money making machines on wheels, anywhere they can, probably to boost their christmas party funds.

generally, they stay in the same place for 4 to 5 days before moving them as people cotton on and slow down well before they reach them.

i.e. A23 layby southbound, just past the albourne turn-off.

i know they've been operating around the worthing area in a few places too

if you see them, please log their positions on this thread so we know where they all are.

DONT PAY. use loophole in law for mobile cameras.

1) send letter asking for calibration test results for that exact camera

2) DO NOT sign the form you will get, put your name in, address, say u where driving , but DO NOT sign.

you heard about the HAMILTON loophole ?
according to british law, a wife & her husband do not have to give evidence against eachother.
below is how they escaped the 3 points and the fine

Speed cameras take photos from behind, so that the driver's face is not visible. This means you may be able to have a speeding charge quashed if you can show that you genuinely do not know who was driving the vehicle at the time of the alleged offence.

The celebrities Neil and Christine Hamilton used this defence in 2003 to dodge a speeding ticket. Their vehicle was caught by speed cameras on the M62, travelling at 62 mph in a section with a temporary limit of 50. As the owner, Christine Hamilton received the Notice of Intended Prosecution, but she claimed she could not remember who was driving the car at this time, her or Neil, and the photograph was inconclusive. The case was thrown out at Manchester Magistrates Court.

If you plan to use this defence, it is a good idea if you have more than one designated driver on your insurance policy (to show that it could have been any of these people driving the car on the day in question). Note that it is an offence not to make your best efforts to establish the identity of the driver, and if the court finds you guilty of this the penalties could be worse than for a speeding offence. However, if there is genuine uncertainty, the Hamiltons' example shows that this can be a highly effective line of defence.

This one always amazes me. Why do people get so upset about the police stopping people from driving too fast and potentially saving lives ?

This is a very simple equasion to work out.

No speeding = no convictions

No convictions = no fines

No fines = no revenue

If people don't speed, there would be no need for the "sneaky cameras"...and a safer world for us all.

This is one of the biggest problems with todays society....the failure to take responsibility for our own wrong doing. The "blame everyone else" society.....you know, it wasn't my fault i was speeding, it's the OB's fault for putting a camera there.

They are not necessarily driving too fast as some of the speed limits are a joke. If you consider that all speed limits are fair and reasonable then you have a point. Plenty of speed traps are set up just before a random change in the speed limit. A good example is Worthing A259 on the dual carriageway 1/2 mile after Thomas-a - Becket is 40mph, after the roundabout it becomes national speed limit. There is no apparent difference in the road leading up to the roundabout or the area beside it, so why a massive difference in the speed limit? Guess where the mobile speed cameras always go up?

because when you're driving on say for example the A23 late at night 23:30 with no-one else on the road and the fuckers are still camped up in a layby trying to get the odd person.
yes! that f***ing annoys me !!!

the other thing worth remembering here is a lot of people drive for a living. the potential for racking up points is huge.
especially when you go into areas you've never been in before.
its all to easy to do 36 mph in an area which you don't know where the limit is 30mph.
thats 3 points. 10% of 30mph plus the added 2mph. you're then 1mph over the limit and liable for 3 points.

I can go along with the "speed trap saves lives" to an extent.

However, why was it that on Saturday morning when I went to Tesco, there was a police van parked in one of the spaces, and three officers roaming round the carpark checking peoples tax discs ?

They're quick enough to remind us how short-staffed they are when they take a day or two to turn up after a burglary has been reported, but I tend to take it with a pinch of salt when you see them wandering round Tesco car parks for a couple of hours.

The housing estate I live on has a 60mph limit!!! Because the council hasn't taken over the roads yet they decided in their infinite wisdom to put a 30mph sign up when you leave the estate. On the reverse side of the sign it is national speed limit!

Now I believe that is more dangerous than going 75mph down a moterway but will the council be fined and the person responsible sacked?

Well the sign has been there for a few months now and nothing has been done.

Out here at Firle, we've been successful in persuading the police to use mobile speed cameras on the A27.

I'm sorry you don't like them, moggy. I don't like losing the use of the road for hours while the emergency services clear up the mess from speed related crashes.

The signs warning about possible speed cameras are now a permanent fixture on the side of the road. The cameras appear only rarely. But the effect has generally been that traffic speeds have reduced and manic overtaking has all but disappeared.

Cheers for that. I just found out that I was in Cambridge when I was sure I was in the Maldives. How stupid can I be?

lets face it.
the only way the old bill can show that crime has been reduced in their annual figures is by getting the motorists.
we're easy targets and when you add all the motoring convictions up at the end of the year in each constabulary, the crime figures look great.
trouble is, crime goes up each year even though they say it doesn't. its only all the motoring convictions which make it look good for them.

as for the country being a safer place ???

what a load of crap!

the country would be a safer place if all the old bill that are used daily in their mobile speed camera units and checking tax discs etc. were taken off all of that and made to walk the beat.
maybe that way they could stop potential proper crime.

Mind you that bit of road should be a dual carrageway anyway.

Dont believe any loophole or other way of avoiding speeding fines. They are all urban myths and will not hold up in court - which is exactly where you end up if you try "dont sign the form" or the classic "send a cheque for more than the fine".

Hamilton law thing is complete bollocks, just think of all the crimes you'd get away with Temporary speed restrictions are unenforcable anyway, which is probably why a judge would sling it out (it should never have been pursued in the first place)

agree with the bit about crashes, but 90% of crashes are caused by driver's incompetance, not speeding.
bad habits, not looking in mirrors, lighting up fags, mobile phones. the list goes on & on
