Betting odds are unreliable for this kind of this - as we saw with the Michael Owen saga. A couple of people see the story on NSC, so they bet on the transfer happening. The bookies see a couple of bets come in, therefore the odds fall. People then use the sudden fall in odds as evidence that the transfer is a 'done' deal.

It is a self-perpetuating situation.
