A Swansea fan on our official msg board said that John Prescott had refused permission for Barnet to have a new stadium because of protests by local residents.
Barnet were unfortunately stymied by the local elections which changed the make up of the council which occured just prior to the councils decision on planning permission. It was a Labour council (for anyone who knows the area difficult to believe but true), but now has a tory majority of one. Labour were to approve the redevelopment of Underhill but the tories stopped it.
As I understand the situation now, Barnet will be eligible for promotion this season should they achieve it, and have been given more time to sort out their plans. It looks like there will be some limited redevelopment of underhill in the future.
I am originally from barnet and get the odd updates from friends who still go and they seem to be more optimistic than they have been in the past few years. yet another club that is constantly fighting for survival.
The Barnet stadium saga is incredibly complicated, and I'm not sure of all the details. There have been several proposals for a new stadium - both inside the borough of Barnet and outside the borough.
Fans have opposed relocation at Copthall and favoured redevelopment of the Underhill site. I think that Prescott refused permission for the Copthall plans.
The latest situation seems to be that Barnet Council are being blamed for failing to support redevelopment at Underhill.
There's also a lot of murky stuff floating around the Barnet stadium story, with allegations of dirty dealings and political trickery.
I wouldn't read any lessons for Falmer in any of this.
Reading most of the reports about Falmer and understanding some but not all of the facts I want to know the answer to 1 question.
Realistically are we going to get it?
