Dear Sir,

Further to our previous discussions on the subject of Cardiff City's proposed new stadium, I can now advise as follows:

Carwyn Jones, the Welsh Assembly's Environment Minister, has today announced that the Assembly will not be challenging Cardiff City Football Club's planning application for its new 30,000 capacity all-seater stadium.

The Assembly's decision not to call in the application for a public inquiry means that work on the £100 million development will start as early as January 2004.

"This is great news for the city, the club and the people of Cardiff," said Cardiff City Council leader Russell Goodway.

Crabtree: Cheers. The good news is that the new stadium will be a whole lot safer and more pleasant for away fans to visit than the dump we're currently playing in.

Fingers crossed that there is some positive news on your new ground soon.

TG: Didn't go to Milan - can't travel any real distance at the moment. Health reasons. My first away trip of the season will be Reading next week - I can just about manage an hour on a coach!

A couple of my mates did go - I saw them this morning and they had a rough ride by the sound of it. I'll be there tomorrow night though.

This is excellent news and all football fans will be pleased for Cardiff. There must be some way we can use this on our NIMBYS to say "See, the enlightened people of Cardiff see how important a football ground is - now if a load of troglodyte unemployed miners can see that why can't you?"

The new stadium site is just across the road from Ninian Park, where the athletics stadium currently stands. There is a lot of wasteland around the athletics stadium, which will used up by the new development.

The existing athletics stadium will be demolished and a new one will be built a few hundred yards away. The new football stadium will include bars, offices and restaurants. The site will also include a hotel, a health club, training facilities, a petrol station, a large retail park, various community facilities and large car parking areas.

The roads around the area will be upgraded, and housing will be built on the existing Ninian Park site.

The stadium will initially be a 2-tier 30,000 all-seater, with the capacity to increase to 58,000 in four further stages if necessary.

The plans really are impressive. The whole area is a neglected dump at the moment, but that looks set to change.

The council were very clever in their dealings with Hammam. Initially, he simply wanted a new stadium, a hotel and a retail park on the site.

Naturally enough, the council insisted on all sorts of additions to the original plans before they would give them the go-ahead. The major change was the improved road systems around the site, but they also insisted on the whole area being landscaped, lots of new footpaths, cycle tracks, community sports facilities and even a couple of monuments!

CTS: The retail side of the development mostly. I'm not 100% sure of the details to be honest, but apparently it's all sorted.
