When I was fourteen I was pinned against a metal barrier at Aldershot for twenty minutes. At the old Den, Millwall, I was lifted off my feet in the crush getting out. It is almost always the entrances and more likely the exits that cause problems with the old grounds. I did see somebody with a rather bizarre accident when somebody must have slipped and cut their head very badly on the barriers in the North stand at the Goldstone, a half an hour before the start of an ordinary old Division 3 match so it wasn't crowded. Since then I have always stood pitch side of the barriers.

Not enough barriers at the old Den and the old Elm Park, and I could see accidents happening quite easily, and it was only the weight of people that prevented it. These steeper terraces gave a better view than the shallow terraces of the "Chicken Run" at the Goldstone.

In Germany, where it is cheap to get in and attendances are soaring, there are still standing terraces for League games.
