Hearts want to play in OZ

Hearts have revealed they want to play a Bank of Scotland Premier League game in Australia next season.

The Edinburgh club are on course to sell their Murrayfield ground to slash their debts and play home games elsewhere.

The bulk of those will be at nearby Murrayfield, the home of Scottish rugby union.

But the Jambos insist they are serious about playing one home game on the other side of the world next season.

Their preferred opponents are champions elect Celtic, although whether Hoops boss Martin O'Neill is keen on flying his squad halfway across the globe remains to be seen.

The Bank of Scotland Premier League confirmed that the Hearts proposal had been officially lodged with them at their Hampden Park headquarters yesterday.

A Hearts spokesman told the club's official website: "The chance to go to Australia presents us with an opportunity to widen the awareness of Hearts and market our brand in a new area of the world.

"Supporters should be assured that the club will adjust season ticket packages accordingly and no fan in Scotland will lose out financially because of this venture. How we go about ensuring this remains to be seen, but there are a number of options.

"It is a terrific opportunity that everyone at the club is enthusiastic about but it is important to reflect that there are still important hurdles to be overcome before a deal is concluded to take the SPL to Australia. If the plan does come about then it could help take Hearts to a new level."

Manager Craig Levein gave his backing to the proposal, which would see the game played in Melbourne.

He said: "I don't know if it will happen. It is certainly something that is new and different. It is something that we would welcome as an experience more than anything else. I think that there are a lot of ex-pats in Australia.

"I would see it as a life experience and it could help the club."

An SPL spokesman revealed the league were keeping an open mind on the plans.

He said: "We received the proposal yesterday and we are giving it due consideration."

In my computer
They should ring my local club at home - although with it being summer at home during the playing season here - it would be a trifle warm to play? at least after the game its only a two minute walk to the pub right on the beach....

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
Whichever thread you read its still a desperate atempt to drum up interest in a non-story by a club with an arsehole for a chairman that is never going to happen in a million years, as he desperately tries to take the heat off himself for being solely responsible for the decimation of over 100 years of history.

I was just trying to make it a human interest story, try and raise a debate with Jambo about the sheer ineptitude of the board of Hearts. Being the :dunce: that I am, I failed to realise that he's not logged on at the moment.

I was off work yesterday ferrying the kids to playgroup and nursery when I heard this news on Five live. Nearly crashed the car. This guy is an absolute C*NT. He has taken Hearts to the brink of extinction and now thinks this will curry favour with the Hearts fanbase. I saw through it for what it was. A pathetic attempt to deflect attention away from the struggle within the club in an attempt to get some headlines. I succeeded in getting headlines but I have visited the Hearts Kickback2 messageboard(the new one, he closed the old one down two weeks ago) and my fellow Hearts fans are unanimous in their scorn for this idea. It will be no surprise to learn that it was timed to try and deflect attention away from the launch of the SAVE OUR HEARTS from the Hearts Supporters Trust this morning.
