Recall reading he was frustrated with the lack of minutes which when given the chance, to not put in maximum effort is bizarre.

Maybe protecting himself for a move this summer
Makes you wonder how much pressure managers come under to play players to facilitate moves ie if you can play him enough that we get X for him, you can then bring in Y.

Thought Welbeck looked more knackered…. But assumed that could be the only reason….
Welbeck did look knackered but was wise in the circumstances. When we were on the counter, he'd sometimes hang back so we had extra cover when we lost possession. Taking him off would have left Webster as our only experienced player on the pitch. Think it was a good decision.
That said, we have Joao Pedro back for Liverpool and potentially Georginio too. Will be great to be able to bring better quality attacking subs on.

Or perhaps give a half each?

The only thing I would say is that although I don’t think he’s playing terribly well, having O’Riley means we do look a bit stronger out of possession, as we get more numbers in the middle.

I liked what he did yesterday with the constant switching of Lamptey and Wieffer given whether we were in defensive or possession mode - an example of a manager raising the performance of both players with a little bit of thought

How much they play will be down to the fitness of Georginio.
Good call on MOR. If I was the manager (a bad idea obvs), might start him alongside Welbeck against Liverpool just to provide some initial solidity which means we'll have Georginio and Joao Pedro to come on when they're tiring.
Think @London Irish is right to point to the way Lamptey and Wieffer were set up yesterday, and that also helped with the defensive shape -- and pressing, as the penalty award demonstrated.

And re last your point, when Ferdi played in a similar role at Liverpool it worked well.

Second game in a row, we looked more solid defensively, as we weren’t quite so open…..

Is the penny finally dropping?
Pleased to see him come over at the end and receive the applause….

Was surprised Baleba came off though, ?exhaustion
Like we did on the winning run before a baffling return to the headless chicken approach. Snappy passing and some decent patterns of play on Saturday. Much more promising, though we still rarely have complete control.

For me it’s the shape out of possession.
Did it at Newcastle away, and then seem to almost abandon it, but I think with O’Riley acting as another body in midfield out of possession it has helped us (Brentford apart).

We were still conceding during our run, (Soton and Chelsea we didn’t but we’re still open) but Saturday I felt more confident with the shape.

Interesting take. In my head Gruda earned a start ahead of O'Riley in the next game, but you're probably right that whilst it would be more attacking, we might lose something out of possession.

Once we see the next match day squad we'll see how Fab sees it. If O'Riley starts then he's definitely being picked for more than attacking link up play.
