It's an interesting one, this one. Obviously, taking fans individually, it's bollocks. A diehard fan is a diehard fan, wherever s/he lives - and Brighton have plenty.
But look at the distribution of league clubs, and you will notice a major concentration up north - which is no coincidence (and yes, I know that the Football League started off as a northern league and that's one historical reason for such a concentration). I mean, until last season Lincolnshire, of all places, had as many league clubs as Sussex, Kent, Surrey and Hampshire combined, with only one-sixth of the population.
Having lived in the Midlands, the North, and Scotland, I can assure you the further north you get the more the football matters. Yes, football matters no more to a northern fan than it does to a southertn fan, it's just that it matters to more people in the north.
That's my observation, anyway.
