Falklands are belived to be surrounded by Oil Fields (yet to be found), go figure

Really? And if they were ever found how much would it cost to ship it 8000 miles?

Based on the cost of world oil at the moment, a lot less than it would to sell!

Purely conjecture as nothing has been found.

I think people underestimate just how proud the Kelpies are of their British heritage. They are as keen, if not more so, than the Gibraltarians.
My Dad, at the age of 62, was so upset at the invasion, he went to the recruiting office to see if there was anything he could do to help out.

That is why I post like I do. I don't base my views on what was in the press or on tv, or even what's in history books. I can give you names, ages and addresses of eye witnesses to things that went on. It just doesn't correlate with the views of a lot of people that post here.

Which is the most run down backward city? Sheffield, with the loss of the pits and steel industry, or Brighton?
I know the answer is the local councils but it does go against the view that Britain was ruined.

That is an impact f war, not what war is about.

On reading that, who believes this was about a British island with a tiny population thousands of miles away being invaded that admittedly, most of the UK never heard of?

Me. And I've explained the reasons why.

I am not a Thatcher lover but you are wrong about the Falklands too.
My StepMum is from the Falklands and we had friends there. Jack worked with Sir Rex Hunt for the British Government.

I am for ever grateful that we got the Falklands back from an illegal invasion. Argentina have NEVER owned the Falklands and have no international claim on it whatsoever.

Question why does England feel that they have to "own" every country in the world.

Las Malvinas (Falklands) are as close to Argentina as say the Isle of Wight is to England. Why on earth does England lay claim to it.

I am not from Yorkshire. I didn't move there until I was 22. I moved back here 3 years ago.
Both Ned and I have posted here in the past about what happened in Yorkshire during the 80's. It does strike me as strange that Thatcher isn't hated in the north as much as I have read and heard since I moved back down south.
Ned posted a couple of weeks ago that his Dad lost his job 3 times in two years in the steel industry but that wasn't the fault of the Government but of cheaper steel being manufactured elsewhere in the world.
Power stations were using cheap Polish coal so the Government said that taxes couldn't be used to prop up the mining industry any more which was losing money hand over fist.
The miners didn't want to strike. All meetings were in the open air and all votes were visible. Men put their hands up because every else could see who was for and against (peer pressure) Some just wanted their redundancy money or to transfer to the newly opened Pontefract field which was still going strong. As I said a couple of weeks ago, my next door neighbour eventually got his redundancy money and retrained as a manager for Victoria Wine company. He was glad to get out of the pit. He hated it. Scargill started off as a union conveynor and ended up with two cars and a massive house in Yorkshire. Some communist!!

Because many of the southerners seem to be hanging on to the coat-tails of champagne socialists like Ben Elton, when it was <cough> trendy to rant about politicians. We have a little underclass of kiddies who pop up with their "opinions" on Thatcher, and the best they could possibly remember is that they didn't get milk one Monday. However, there are some on here who have valid complaints about Thatcher, it's just that they always end with irrational statements. Wonder how Ben Elton feels now that he moved up on the property ladder and into the world of the literati that he despised - until they offered him book advances. Most of them still live in fantasy TV land of "The Young Ones" and "Spitting Image" - a world where it is still "funny" to say "f***" (a bit like NSP, but in flares). It would have been great to give in to Scargill and his threats to destroy the country - or to keep propping up industries which were trying to gouge more and more taxpayers money to remain operational but inefficient. And as for the Falklands - people should try asking one of them who they wanted to run the country before offering up their well-thought anti-conflict arguments - nice and safe from a comfy chair. Consider that in Argentina, "the disappeared" were running into their millions and the human rights records were appalling. They wanted to remain English, and did so.

Face facts - if you are failing to provide a service in a capitalist society, then you fail. These days we seem to look at the corruption, shrug our shoulders, and just accept that we are stuck with them. Why should we moan when a Japanese company can make their cars cheaper in Vietnam - why should we force them to operate at a deficit to keep our workforces running? Should we be forced to put our hands into our pocket to support Leeds United? They are a football club, after all, and surely we should be showing solidarity with them. (And I am fully aware that the more mature members on here would have no problem with helping a fellow club to survive...)

So, now for my ill-considered rant about a politician so that I don't feel left out.

And I would pull the lever to drop Blair and Brown. Try me.

It always surprises me that people would 'hang' a politician.

Where would the money come from to prop up the Coal industry? Would you have been happy to pay your hard earned £s to support an industry htat was losing millions by the minute? Would you?

It is very easy to blame Thatcher and defend 1,000s of unemployed, but cola was finished. Has it made a comeback? ??? Was Maggie right???

Cola ????

Depends which brand. ASDA cola is on it's way out, no matter how they rebrand it. Now Diet Coke (as a cola) is in, after they found out that you can keep kids amused by dropping packets of Mentos into it. Full fat Cola is not good - with a reputation for dissolving teeth overnight.

Obviously Maggie should have nationalised the Cola industry to standardise it and give "Rola Cola" a fair chance to make a few sales whilst we propped it up with tax payers money. It would definitely have helped Peter Kay with his repertoire.

If it was "not an issue at the time" - why would she have made ecological reasoning a priority - would it have made her decision more socially acceptable if she destroyed the coal industry based on ecological reasoning? According to the argument, she would not have been aware of it, so her reasoning was based on financial sense. That and making sure that King Arthur Scargill had to release his grip on the unions.
