Why is it that tv and radio companies insist on thrusting retired players into the media?!! Some of these men can hardly string two words together.

This has been bugging me for a long time but the final straw came tonight listening to Darren Gough try and talk about the budget on Talksport. I used to like Gough as a cricketer but he is embarassing on the radio. He is so thick it is unbelievable that he is given a position to be able to talk about this on national radio. I know that if i listen to radio 4 i will get a far more educated view on the budget but I happen to like listening to Adrian Durham because although he sometime says controversial things to provoke a debate, he is a media professional and knows what he is doing on the radio and has a decent amount of intelligence. It irritates me that a lot of people who are trained professionals and would be a lot better to listen to on the radio are being kept off air by imbeciles like Gough, Micky Quinn and Stan Collymore. And dont get me started on that twunt Irani in the mornings!

Another load of shite that came out of Gough's mouth yesterday was that Leo Messi is over-rated and only does well in a poor league and that he would struggle in the premier league??!! Does he even watch football?! He shouldnt be allowed on national radio to spout that crap.

I like the idea of Talksport, a station that as the name suggests mainly talks about sport, so i'm reluctant to give up on it but listening to these idiots is making me turn it off. The station is always a better listen when the professional presenters like Hawksbee and Jacobs, Durham, Danny Kelly and Mark Saggers are talking and not Jason fuckin Cundy and Andy Townsend.

This doesnt just apply to radio, its the same on Sky. How did Jamie Redknapp get a job? Do they know that their main audience is men?! And Paul Merson, as unintentionally funny as he can be, should not be on air as he cannot speak correctly. And you can add Tony Cottee, Paul Walsh and a number of others to that list. Soccer Saturday is a good programme but it would be even better if they could employ former players you could understand.

This must be especially annoying to those who spend years training to work in the industry and who would be very good but cant get jobs because they are taken by these ignorant ex players.

Rant over. But I would be interested to hear if anyone else feels the same or if it is just me

You've answered your own dilemma: don't like, don't listen/watch

Townsend is easier to listen to than the others its true, he does come across quite normal and down to earth. The other idiot I forgot is Ray Houghton. Nobody can have an opinion on the game if they weren't a professional according to him

There must be plenty of characters that are interesting, funny, informative and jovial. Rather than a retired top pro.

Wild example, but from what I have seen of Oatway, I would much rather hear him talk about te game and offer his opinion as opposed to John Barnes, Darren Anderton or other such dullards.

Like I said, I want to listen to and watch it and a lot of the professional presenters are very good and the callers on Talksport are very knowledgable and entertaining but they employ these useless "experts". I have no problem with ex stars working in the media if they do the correct training and are decent presenters/pundits but the media companies just seem to put any big name on air no matter how good their communication skills are. Remember Gazza at the 2002 world cup? Train crash. And now we have the zero personality of Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

Agree with virtually every word, Fareham. It's a shame, a real wasted opportunity by talkSPORT because in many ways they have done the public a big service by offering a genuine alternative to BBC radio sports coverage. Then they undermine that effort by putting up some real numpties.

My personal bete noire is when Alan Brazil says: "And now for the latest behind the scenes at Old Trafford on all the big issues we're going to talk to Man Utd great Clayton Blackmore. Good marning Clayton." (A bloke who played a few games in the 80s, and has about as much of a clue on the current club as you or I do).

Unfortunately, while you can rile against it, the grim truth is that (and it's not just radio) mediocrity is king, there is a prevailing view that audiences will watch/listen to/read any old shit put in front of them, and that increasing the quality will not add much to the audience figures/sales. There is also a view that a celebrity talking shite will attract more people than a lesser known expert talking sense. That is the situation, and it's going to take some changing.

I can't stand Clive "I love Man Utd, let's talk about Man Utd" - "But Clive, this is a champions league game between Lyon and Barcelona" "I don't care, I love Man Utd. Let's talk about Rooney" Tyldesley.

Utter fuckwit.

I agree 100%. Sports coverage across the board has become dumbed down with all the old pros getting involved, whether it's Merson, Windass & co for football, or Parrott, Doherty et al for snooker.

By a country mile, the best presenters are trained journalists - the likes of James Richardson.

The old pros will never say anything contraversial because it might offend one of their old mates from their playing days.

I don't have time to list them all, but these are the ones that particularly grind my gears!
In no particular order:
Garth Crooks
Mark Lawrenson
Mark Bright
Chris Kamara
Paul Merson
Dean Windass (DEAN WINDASS!!!!) :wrong:
Andy Townsend

While I appreciate that it would be simple not to watch or listen if I don't like them, but as someone who likes sport, what am I supposed to do when there's no f***ing choice?!? :US:

:lolol:

Sky Sports have to have people like Dean Windass on though, because, even though he's a bit clueless, he's a "character of the game." Sky have always had them, from Bestie and Rodney Marsh all the way through to Merson and Le Tissier now.

I can't wait for the day Jimmy Bullard gets his job on Sky.

Sky do things best with football. Soccer saturday may have a few thick heads but it is upbeat and a laugh.

Moving away from this heads towards the BBC Bore

To be fair to Le Tissier, he can actually string a sentence together unlike Merson or Windass.

I don't mind Soccer Saturday using "characters" but I cringe every time those two say anything.

I think there has to be an honourable mention for Gareth Southgate, in a river of shit that is ITV football coverage he really does come across well and what he says makes sense.
