Back in the day yes, but loose tea, why would you? My folks have still got one of those ball-like strainers in their drawer at home, very odd device - presume you just put loose tea in and dunk it in a cup of boiling water, although I would have thought the leaves would seep out of the holes. Anyone?

Having made tea before tea bags, I have used both. The spoon type strainer does work ok but is a bit more fiddly than just straining out the tea-leaves, if you could be bothered.
Usually left them in the cup to settle. You could then have them read by the local tea leaf reader. :hilton:

Yes, yes I do. As I'm spending quite at home recently, I decided to stop for tea every day at 4 and have a proper cup or two - from a pot, with a strainer. Went out and bought a cheap but decent teapot from Sainsburys and found a v.cheap strainer in M&S. Very civilised I say.

I still use my tea strainer - perfect for Sunday afternoon tea.

Yes I have and still do sometimes both when using a teapot and by putting loose tea directly into the strainer and pouring the water through it. The latter was how my old man made it and it works surprisingly well. Loose tea definitely better than bags in terms of flavour.

I've got one of those gauze things on a chain, that you fill with leaves and allow it to sit in the water. However, in the end it's really just a manual tea-bag when it comes down to it. So, it doesn't get used much - last time was because I bought a loose tea blend at a specialist shop.

Where my Mum is in the nursing home, they seem to be able to make a decent cuppa in about 1 minute - which I am trying to find out ...what kind of teabags they use!
