what i will say is that if england DO manage to win the group then they have a reasonable looking quarter final....once in the semi's anything can happen really (ie. probably lose on penalties)

italy, croatia and ireland are all beatable (although italy are pretty underrated in my view, looking at their squad)

Question - Spain are obviously going for a hat-trick of major wins; I'm 99.9% sure no other European side has ever done that before? I'm not sure about the likes of Brazil - knowing them they've probably won a Copa America-World Cup-Copa Amercia?? It would be a great achievement for Spaim

No side, European or otherwise, has ever won three consecutive international tournaments.

For what its worth, I'm backing the Germans for this one.

The lack of expectation before WC90 was based purely on experience. England were a SPECTACULAR flop in Germany in 1988 and the WC qualifying had hardly set any houses on fire.

It's funny, I was reading Brilliant Orange last month and it contends that the Dutch were very lucky against England. I don't remember the tournament (too young) but three defeats from three games tells you all you need to know really!

Hopefully our non-appearance in Euro 2008 and our non-performance in WC2010 will have the same expectation-limiting effect.

Holland v Germany Final.
England knocked out in the quarters if they can scrape through the group in second.
