You can be a tosser some times Easy10

He is taking a gamble for sure, but it is nowhere near being a blind punt, Sven has spoken to all the people that have worked with him, and managed him, and they have all backed the call, that, along with video evidence is enough for Sven.

I guess if you look hard enough, and want to find holes, you'll find them
I'm a tosser most of the time actually. Doesn't necessarily make me wrong though. I don't care if Sven has spoken to Southamptons youth coach, his agent, his dad, Arsene Wenger, Uncle Tom Cobbly or the Dali Lama. If HE hasn't seen Walcott play a match, then he IS taking a completely blind punt on him.

To take a player to a World Cup on that basis is totally unprofessional and completely irresponsible. But if you're still quite happy with it, then we will have to agree to strongly disagree.

Well, I can't argue with that !!

Oh, and surpirse surprise everyone at Southampton is backing Walcott for the World Cup. How much extra WEDGE do they get from Arsenal when he gets his first full England cap ?

Doubt it muchly.
Owen was joint top scorer in the Premiership in the run-up to that World Cup - he was the Boy Wonder, absolutely NAILED on for that squad. All the grief Hoddle got for not starting him in the opening games of that tournament would have been nothing compared to the outcry if he hadn't taken him at all.

Hoddle was stubborn, but he's not stupid.

If you trawl through a lot that was written and coming from Hoddle, it seemed likely that he would take Wright as the extra forward (think he had Shearer, Sheringham, Ferdinand and maybe Fowler in that squad), but Wright got injured in the Morroco game, Owen came on for him, scored and then the rest is history.

I don't need to trawl through anything Uncle B. Owens time had come - it was clear throughout the entire preceding season that Liverpool had an EXTRAORDINAIRY talent in Michael Owen. The goal v Morrocco obviously didn't do him any harm, but it was already clear that he was something special. No WAY was he missing out on that squad, whether Wright was fit or not.

Well it had come down to a straight decision between him and Wright for the final strikers spot and Wright was likely to get the nod.

Hoddle had only used Owen in one other game, against Chile.

Weeelll, we could argue all night about what Hoddle was *likely* to do had Wright been fit. My own view is that Owen, by 1998, was a DEFINATE inclusion in the England squad regardless of Wrights fitness. You think otherwise. Happy to leave it at that.

I'm sure there are plenty of players who look good on video

Easy looks good on video, and can be seen (although from an unusual angle) in "Felching Beardies 27"

Felching Beardies 27 was shot when I was in my prime, back in '95. Nowadays I need a bit of soft focus, although I still think I come across quite well in Full Scrotal Deluge - The Bukakke Chronicals. That was only shot in Spring of last year, behind the disused toilets outside Southwick Station.

Big seller in Jakarta, that one.

Is that the one where you are being topped and tailed by the two CYBERMEN, with Dale Winton donning the rubber gloves and giving a knowing smile to camera every 30 seconds?

Thats the one.
Little known fact. I had a complete rectal prolapse within 20 minutes of the end of that shoot. But by GOD it was worth it to have it all stuffed back up there by the camp, anvil-jawed National Lottery presenter. To this day, I'm not sure who enjoyed it more.
