I don't understand this consistant battle England has to play players out of position,

Both Cole and Bridge are in the squad because they are the two best left backs in the country,

neither of them are midfielders YOU F**KING LISTENING ERICSSON !! and anyone else to whom it may concern !!

Thompson will go to EURO 2004 trust me !!

I have argued the case for Thompson ad nuaseum on here ... but few takers ....
He is by far the best natural left sided midfielder we have and he - like Gerrard and Beckham can score from distance

More evidence to prove that Grip is the brains behing the England set up !!

...

GRIP GIVES THOMPSON HOPE

Sven Goran Eriksson's right-hand man Tord Grip has given Alan Thompson hope by telling him a successful Uefa Cup run could keep alive his Euro 2004 chances.

The Celtic wide man made his debut for England in the recent 1-0 defeat in Sweden but was hauled off just before the hour mark after making little impression, prompting suggestions he had blown his chance.

Grip though has given the former Bolton midfielder a glimmer of hope and told him that he can still force himself into the squad if he can help The Bhoys to another long run in the Uefa Cup, as it is his form on the European stage that got him into the last squad.

Grip said: "The whole team didn't do well in Gothenburg. It wasn't a great team performance but Alan did okay.

"It was a bad result but he did all right on the left-hand side. We know what he is capable of.

"It wouldn't be right for anyone to be saying this is Alan's first and last appearance. Nothing has been decided but it is a shame we don't have any other matches before the squad is selected.

"Players will be chosen on the basis of how they are playing for their clubs and it is not true to think that playing in Scotland will count against Thompson.

"He is playing for a massive club and while they have already won the league, they are still involved in the closing stages of the Uefa Cup and he will play against top-class opposition.

"We have seen how he's done in Europe and he has impressed us with his performances.

"If Alan continues to play well in the European ties for Celtic, he has a definite chance of going to Portugal. If anyone is saying he has been counted out, they are wrong."
