If you compare Buttler with Foakes, their first class averages are similar in terms of appearances, so it's a good comparison. When you look at the batting, Foakes has more hundreds. Clearly Buttler has a lot more experience at test and ODI level, but Foakes can be considered extremely unfortunate not to have more of a chance with England

Buttlers batting has looked much better in the last few games, his keeping was a bit rubbish this test but bad performances can happen, just ask Matty Ryan :lolol: Wasn’t he our highest scorer in this match? Yet of course, people will still talk about Foakes.

Batting in England is very, very difficult. Especially after a long lay off, I don’t think there is massive problems in England’s batting.

Foakes didn’t have the best summer with the bat last year, think he averaged something mid 20s so at a time when England’s batting line up has been fragile to say the least I think that’s why Buttler has kept his place.

If Foakes can get some runs when he does get to play some cricket this summer I’m sure he will put some pressure on Buttler

There are far more fundamental problems with Englands batting line up than worrying about Buttler.

Really? Like what?
The two openers who've given us top order solidity? Root or Stokes? Pope who's going ,averages 10 more and got the key first innings score?
He's got the lowest average out of all the batsman apart from Crawley who's 22 and an opener. And the main point is he's a far worse keeper than Foakes but is getting in on his batting despite the evidence suggesting Foakes would score more

I’m happy to have either behind the stumps .... but where is the evidence he will score more.

Bottom line is that we can’t, won’t and shouldn’t drop Buttler after that innings. “Well done for winning the match old chap but we’re going to give Foakes a go in Southampton....”

Longer term though it’s great that there is this competition and I assume we’ll be able to take both on a “bio bubble” tour? In fact with Wood and Crawley not starting the last test either there’s competition all over the squad. Pretty healthy if you ask me.

That's one year. Buttler's test average was 28 last year and 25 the year before

Very true... but it is about form.

I think they are both capable and both have a legitimate case for being the keeper.

In many ways Foakes has been unlucky, probably didn’t score enough runs last summer to push his way into the line up, especially under Bayliss who clearly preferred Buttlers aggressive approach. And this summer has had any cricket as such to put pressure on Buttler.

To push someone out of the team they either need to be playing poorly or you need to be absolutely smashing it ..... and neither of those cases are true currently.

Foakes is a great keeper and I’m sure something will happen for him to gain his opportunity and that’s when he needs to perform and keep his spot.

Buttler should be played as a specialist batsman if he can do what he did yesterday, say number 5 or 6.

Foakes at 7 to save the 100 or so runs Buttler gave away.

That's what I think yes. If you think Buttler is worth his place at a batsman pick him there, he might even score more as he won't have the downside of his keeping being criticized.

What a load of nonsense about the openers. What evidence is there Foakes would score more at this level ? How many test matches has he played to prove that ?

I don't really get nonsense about the openers? You think they're more of a problem than Buttler? Despite them scoring more runs?
And doing their job
From Wisden
not one of the openers to partner Cook post-Strauss averages as many runs or balls per innings as the incumbents do

I wonder if Ollie Robinson will get into the team for the next test. I can't see them playing the same pace bowlers again, they'll want to rest one or two

Old Trafford wasn't an easy wicket to keep on with the irregular bounce but Buttler had a mere keeping to Bess.

England have a habit of selecting a batting keeper rather than the best wicketkeeper. Alex Stewart wasn't the greatest wicketkeeper but was a brilliant batter. Can't see Foakes getting the nod over Buttler even though he is a much better keeper.

I can see changes for the next test, Archer is struggling with his pace and Anderson is sadly showing his age, I can see Wood and Sam Curran coming into the side.

That’s a bit rose-tinted.

We are unbalanced with Stokes at 4 and are still very vulnerable to losing early wickets. Root is in poor form and we’ve been bailed out twice by the lower order in this game.

No, I take all that. But they're all scoring more runs than Buttler
