England's best win ever in a World Cup opening game. The turgid, abject performances of the Nations League were a distant memory.

There's still some work to be done at the back, but going forward we're going to be a match for anyone.

Bellingham is going to be one of the break-out stars of this tournament.

Calm, controlled, cultured. Old head on 19 year old shoulders.

The future is here.

I watched (sorry!!) the second half in a pub in Cyprus. Unbelievably the english people (can't call them fans) there were moaning and groaning all through about the England team. 6-2! What do they want?

That was an entertaining start to the world cup. Couldn't ask for much more could you? 8 goals, dodgy VAR, 24 minutes of injury time and some nice football.

Bellingham is some player already and he's only 19. Our midfield and forwards look fine, our defence ropey but we knew that going into the tournament. I hope that when we play the better teams we don't go too defensive.

I also hope the Iranian keeper is ok, that was a pretty nasty clash of heads. And respect to the Iranian players staying silent during the anthem and to their fans giving it a good booing.

Did anyone notice towards the end we were given a freekick for offside - and proceeded to take it almost 10 yards inside their half. Ridiculous stuff.

The law changed a few years ago so that this can now be correct (not saying it was in this case but it is at least possible.)

That is possible. If the opposing player was inside our half when the ball was played, but 10 yards outside our half when he played (or attempted to play) the ball then the free kick is given where he did that, not where he was when the ball was played.

Well I consider myself entertained, and excited about the talent in this England squad.

Could we go all the way? Maybe. I suspect it will be a very good team that stops us.

A bright attacking start. Mount and Saka are genuine quality, and with Sterling and Bellingham you have a really sprightly midfield. I'm not sold on Rice, I hear all the plaudits and accolades, and I am probably wrong but I don't see a player that matches the hype yet - I hope I'm wrong, but made quite a few mistakes for me.

Hands up for Maguire, Shaw, Trippier and Stones. Very solid performance.

Saka is, Mount is good but I don't think he's Saka or Foden's level. People saying he's the next Lampard, I don't think he's that good.

Yes, however in this case it was just slack refereeing. He ordered them back to the linesman’s flag, and ran away, they just carried the ball forward when he back was turned. I guess at 6-1 with 5 minutes left, he just thought bollocks to it. The two Iranian lads weren’t best pleased.

This often confuses people. Being in an off side position is not an offence it's becoming active that is, therefore that is where the freekick is given. Not sure the Iranian players understand the laws of the game (indeed that applies to many!)

Great watch. Attacking and lovely football. Gareth continuing in tournaments where we left off.

Take note the knockers !
