With the emergence of Ledley King I'm coming round to the idea of a sweeper system 5-3-2.

We have the 3 idea centre-backs in Campbell, Ferdinand and King, the ideal wing-backs in Wright-Phillips and Ashley Cole, Beckham, Lampard holding in the middle, Gerrard breaking forward to support Rooney and Defoe / Owen.

This could be the game for Joe Cole to replace Gerrard.

I know most people don't like 5-3-2 but think about it - how many attacking players do most continental teams commit?

I think Rio, Sol and Ledley could easily deal with the threat, and the wing-backs have the pace to get back.

If Sven does go to Real Madrid I hope we get a manager who is prepared to experiment with a formation that gets the best out of the international class players we have available, and I think this is it.

I've long favoured this system, I think it actually gets the best out of our players, unlike the rigidness of 4-4-2

It also gets round the awkward question of finding 2 international quality left-sided, left-footed players.

There's not much height, except at set pieces, but more than compensated for by attacking flair and raw pace.

What like Wayne Bridge and Ashley Cole?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to se the 3-5-2 in action. Especially if Woodgate can get fit and start playing. Campbell, Ferdinand and Terry/Woodgate would be emmense.

I've been boring people in pubs to death saying this for ages, although personally I'd still pick Terry over King at the moment. I think Wright-Phillips might get a bit exposed defensively on the right hand side, so I'd be tempted to go for either Neville or (ahem) Dyer at right wing-back.

Sven only plays 4-4-2, and I've been saying for over a year that it should be Bridge and Ashley Cole on the left. I've not, however, advocated 5-3-2 since Hoddle played it effectively in World Cup 98.

I believe that you fit the system around the players, and with the emergence of the likes of King and Wright-Phillips, and the waning of Heskey and Gary Neville, it is a system now worth trying.

I believe we can outgun any side we face if we go out with the right 11 and right formation. Sven is too cautious.

Failing a transition to 3-5-2:

Robinson

Cole
King
Campbell
Hargreaves (Neville)

J.Cole (Gerrard)
Lampard
Beckham
Wright-Phillips

Defoe
Rooney (if fit)

Subs: Green, Terry, Bridge, Carragher, Dyer, Owen, Smith

Bit lacking in CM cover, although I guess Hargreaves could move forward if necessary, or, dare I say it, Redknapp's been playing well for Spurs (cue injury).

So you are going to leave out the one consistent goal scorer in Owen and play Defoe? Also not going to have Rio on the bench, when him and Sol are the best central defence pairing we have?
