Can't see this anywhere else...

Goalkeepers:
1. Joe Hart (Manchester City)
13. Robert Green (West Ham)
23. Jack Butland (Birmingham City)

Defenders:
12. Leighton Baines (Everton)
5. Gary Cahill (Chelsea)
3. Ashley Cole (Chelsea)
2. Glen Johnson (Liverpool)
14. Phil Jones (Manchester United)
15. Joleon Lescott (Manchester City)
6. John Terry (Chelsea)
18. Phil Jagielka (Everton)

Midfielders:
19. Stewart Downing (Liverpool)
4. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
8. Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
16. James Milner (Manchester City)
20. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal)
17. Scott Parker (Tottenham)
7. Theo Walcott (Arsenal)
11. Ashley Young (Manchester United)

Forwards:
9. Andy Carroll (Liverpool)
21. Jermain Defoe (Tottenham)
10. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
22. Danny Welbeck (Manchester United).

Looks to me like starting 4-5-1 with Parker holding alongside Gerrard and Lampard with Walcott and Young on the wings and Carroll up front.

Or you're just reading too much into the squad numbers.

Numbers means nothing when it comes to a starting 11, but can't we give downing 99 just to be safe?

Sorry, don't agree. History suggests that at least 8 or 9 of the players numbered 1-11 will be in the first starting XI. Why give them those numbers otherwise? You don't think Parker wanted number 8? Or Wellbeck number 9? I don't buy it.

I find the squad numbers fascinating. The French must be looking at them wondering whether Hodgson is giving them his team selection on a plate, or whether it's a double bluff.

Swap Parker for Rooney and I fancy the 1-11 WILL be his team vs France.

Amazing to think 2 of our 3 goalkeepers weren't even playing in the top flight last season.

Lampard and Gerrard together in the centre of midfield. This time, more than any other time, this time, getting it all together, I think they can get it right.

Do I bollocks!

They probably will be - there's hardly any shocks if those in bold above, start.

I don't really understand your point - you've highlighted 7 'obvious' starters for England, one of whom is suspended (Rooney), and one of whom I'd argue isn't that obvious (Lampard, who has started 1 of the last 5 games). So that gives you 5 or 6 who will start against France. What about the other 5? My point was that the squad numbers suggest that Cahill and Terry may well start at centre half, Walcott is likely to start on the wing and Carroll is likely to start up front, based upon the squad numbers. That tells us about at least 4 positions that were less than certain beforehand - I think it's fair to say that's a bit of insight.

The point is, that with the exceptions of Carroll and Cahill, the 1-11 numbers have simply gone to the established players, over the squad newcomers and fringe players. And in both those cases there wasn't an established name to have that shirt anyway. Cahill wouldn't have 5 if Ferdinand was there, even if he was in the squad and likely to play.

If Numbers 1-11 start then we could be out before the group stage has finished. Gerrard and Lampard just doesn't work

I think you're being a bit selective there. Walcott is barely more established than Milner (who has more caps) - don't forget Walcott wasn't in the squad 2 years ago. Lampard and Parker have tended to alternate the number 8 shirt - in fact the last time they played together (against Spain) Lampard wore 10 and Parker 8 (yes I am that bored).

It just struck me that, looking through from 1-11 there's an XI which could play together in an obvious formation. Maybe it's pure fluke based upon seniority, but maybe it's not and that's the team he intends to play - I don't think it's the leap of faith that you're making it out to be.
