Though England celebrated the draw in Istanbul which secured a place in the European Championships next summer, their failure to win will see them down among the second seeds when the draw for the finals is made on 30 November.

England have won 37 points in the two campaigns, giving them a rating of 2.31 points per match. Victory in Istanbul would have given them 2.43, the best record of any qualifier bar the hosts and holders. That would have put them in Pot 1 ahead of the Czech Republic. Instead they will be in the second pot.

Given that there are just four groups, it's hard to believe that we could be a top seed anyway.

But I guess we could have, along with Portugal, France and Italy.

Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Bulgaria etc don't seem too itimidating.

Not Luton! Thank God
Out of those 4, the only one I wouldn't want to be paired with is France. The other 3 I think we can take reasonably easly.

This way we definitely won't be getting Italy, Spain or Turkey (assuming those two qualify and Germany and then Holland if they dont), which is a much better situation.

surely these teams will be in the 3rd and 4th pot and therefore making it more likely that England will be in the group of death along the lines of France, England, Spain and Turkey....

plus 5 via play offs!

So if you go by your logis we will be in the 4 seeded treams. I believe seedings based on record in previous years, not the qualifying tournament!

No,

France (holders) and Portugal (hosts) are seeded, as are Sweeden and Czech Republic (top two from the qualifying Tournie).

It's FIFA that use the previous tournament rule for the World Cup.

Points-per-game ratios: 1 Sweden 2.39; 2 Czech Rep 2.33; 3= England, Italy, *Spain 2.31; 6 *Turkey 2.22; 7 Germany 2.18; 8 *Netherlands 2.17; 9 *Croatia 2.12; 10= Denmark, *Russia 2.06; 12= Bulgaria, *Slovenia; 14 *Scotland 1.81; 15 Switzerland 1.61; 16 Greece 1.56; 17 *Norway 1.33; 18 *Latvia 1.25; 19 *Wales 1.22.

*Yet to qualify through play-offs

I looked through the UEFA rules and it says

Euro 2004 qualifying matches and/or World Cup 2002 results! Not sure what they have used, definitely not just the Euro qualifiers! (points and games shown above)

I am confused. I know i'm stupid but as these are UEFA rules they probably change them to make sure that England are not seeded and get teh toughest draw!

Mr Blobby

England were top class before and after the penalty miss anyway - turkey were at home, no England fans, and the squad were a credit to the shirts . The turks didn't wash over the lads like a tidal wave, they displayed no fear or awe of the occasion, and were way superior to the opposition. Not every player had 'the perfect game', but the banana skin was circumnavigated.

This was a draw to celebrate, not for dragging the players down and moaning about.

Remember the WC qualifiers, after spanking the Germans we almost lost to Greece ? That was a dodgy moment for doubts - but for last saturday they are worthy of applause from every quarter.

Can we be in the same group as Turkey? I thought that they prevented teams from the same qualifying group playing each other in the 1st round, I may well be wrong though.

As for seedings isn't recent tournament pedigree taken into account as well as qualification? In which case we'll not be seeded following our effort at Euro 2000.
