How about you hate who you want to hate and i'll hate who I want?

I really couldn't give a toss about Scotland. An irrelevance, as far ad I'm concerned. I'm more interested in saving my bile for the greasy, cheating, winking, child-kidnapping Portugese.

Ronaldo is one of 'em. What's not to hate?

You can hate 'em all you like, but it's because they've been better than England that you hate them. And that's sad.

Not sure about hate but I do tend to despise the USA and Ireland. Always want to beat Germany or dirty cheating Argies. Tend to support Scotland unless they are playing us.

Not Germany. A rivalry has to be requited to be a true rivalry, and Germany has nothing but respect for English football and English football culture.

Not Scotland. To be fair, our head to head record is an English national disgrace. But they are a two bob nothing football nation and shouldn't be our rivals. On the point The Spanish makes about it always kicking off, that is always because they had half the crowd at Wembley. When played at Hampden, hardly any English turned up. That says it all really.

Australia? Hmm, arguably our biggest sporting rivalry, but football? Nah. They've never been competitive in the sport until the last 5 or 6 years.

Portugal? Not for me. They've beaten us in the last FOUR World Cup/Euros (going back to 1986) but it's not really a rivalry is it? They've just been better than us, that's all.

For me it's Argentina. A proper requited rivalry, spiteful and hotly contested on the pitch, and bitter and prickly off it. Whatsmore, both sides have had their successes against the other.

I'm with Simster on this one. I'm not saying there's no longer a rivalry with Germany but WC2006 was a real watershed in the thawing of Anglo-Teutonic relations as not only were they excellent hosts but their side played attractive, diving and cheating-free football.

Scotland are still huge rivals but the attitudes of their fans has also changed with the advent of more English players playing in Scotland and the omnipresence of the Premiership and Chamions League. A lot of Rangers fans will be supporting England in this tournament.

The Argentina rivalry goes back to '66 and Rattin, to '78 andf the tournament we missed that they won, '86 and the Hand Of God, '98 and Beckham, '02 and the back-to-the wall victory, the wonderful friendly in Switzerland.

And even though we've done them a couple of times since - and we won the Falkland War anyway - we still need to get even over Maradona's handball.

England - Argentina for me is the dream final.

no the point i was making is part of the reason the home internationals was shelved is because of the trouble and thats why we dont play them so much, and what that has done for the rivalry. the fact it used to happens means the rivalry was intense, and not all because the jocks fancied a jolly up in london every year or so.

Scotland, the majority of their fans just loathe the English, there is a real bitterness to the point that they won't even say the word "England", they just refer to our country as "down south"...I guess in case uttering the word makes them feel dirty.

I love our rivalry with Australia and Germany, have met loads of people from both countries and have got along famously with them. As for Argentina, I spent a couple of weeks there back in March and could not have been made feel more welcome...yeah there is the footballing rivalry and the Falklands issue hasn't gone away completely, but it is a really decent place with loads of historical links to the UK...they even have a community in Patagonia with Welsh as their native tongue.

Fair point Spanish...to the point that the Rangers fans, who are supposed to actually like us, came to Manchester and turned it into a war-zone!

the f***ing argies

1) 1966 the animal

2) 1982 Falklands

3) 1986 cheating c unt diego

4) 1998 giving our lads wanker signs from their team coach

The most I have cheered a non england goal was when Bergkamp scored in the 1998 finals in the last minute to knock the argie wankers out

Scots hate us but come on not really rivals are they. Germans for obvious reasons although the French are pretty high up on the list

Germany/Argentina, Argentina is more pure hatred for Maradonas handball, and now he's coaching the Argentinian football team! Germany have been rivals since 1938 methinks.
