what is glorious about losing?

Nothing but it's what the tabloids will be telling you tomorrow, as they do after every England exit from an International tournament.

That is the reason why when the players come home they will think they are heros,
they are not they are losers and its the time the press stopped praising losers

I thought we did OK. As Wrighty said in his analysis we defended well enough for us to create the odd scoring opportunity to win the game.

Although at a lower level, we have seen the Albion defend deep, get men behind the ball and play defensively and gained success playing this way. Although I do not really agree with the deep defending at all it can prove effective, the problem is against the international teams you can do your best to deny them chances but eventually a bit of magic may prove the reason for defeat.

I don’t agree they were a disgrace, but I do think the players didn’t do themselves justice. I felt we played some nice football in the first half. Second half admittedly we did sit back too much and allow very good players time on the ball. That said, but for the referee we would still have won in normal time.

this thread is a little harsh the players gave their all and portugal played well
f***ing TYPICAL.

Look at the players we had across the middle of the park tonight:

Beckham Lampard Gerrard Scholes

NONE of those fuckers could find a white shirt tonight to save their lives. World Class ? Don't make me laugh. The passing tonight was PATHETIC from that lot, and CONSTANTLY put us on the back foot tonight. All night. I think I, along with many others, have been blinded by Sky Sports into thinking these guys are the Real Deal. But when it comes down to it, what have they produced WHEN IT MATTERS ?

We were completely, and utterly, OVERRUN in midfield tonight. It was a neverending tide of red shirts feeding off the misplaced passes and panicked clearances from our "superstars"tonight. Gritt and dtermination will take you so far, but when you are playing at this level, it ain't enough.

Our big players went missing tonight. I say again, Portugal deserved it tonight - they passed us to death. We ewre unlucky to have had that goal ruled out, but overall, we can have absolutely no complaints.

Anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves.

Terry was penalised because he can jump higher than Ricardo? That is rubbish.

You have to lift your arms to do a standing jump.

England were not poor tonight. Portugal could hardly get a shot on target at first.

We did look a little jaded because the heat took it's toll (that always puts the northern European teams at a disadvantage I would love to see some of these Mediterranean teams playing a Euro match on a cold night in January)

Beckham should have scored the penalty and Rooney was unlucky to break a bone in his foot.
It was just one of those things

I think we did our best but we have a pathological instinct to sit back when we are ahead.

It is fatal and we paid the price yet again - we go 2 - 1 down an then hey presto we spark into life and equalise.

Why oh why can't we try and build on a lead ?

Sorry Yorkie, but I have to disagree with you there.
We WERE poor tonight - and thats putting it politely. As I am sure you can imagine, I was shouting far more than that at my TV screen tonight.

England were nothing short of PATHETIC.

We were handed am early goal on a plate by an appalling defensive lapse. Owen finished it superbly without question, but it was an ALMIGHTY cock-up that gave us the lead. But did we build on it ? Like f***.

From that moment, Portugal rolled their sleeves up, and utterly batterered us. We had the odd chance, but by and large, it was a red tidal waves heading towards our goal, thanks to the complete absence of our midfield. I just dunno what came over those players, but to a man, they were an abysmal embarrassment tonight. Appalling.

Lets please get this straight. England were not "unlucky" They were not "robbed". They were simply outplayed, and the better team went though. I am gutted, pissed off, and still livid.

The ref cheated us in the 90th. But England cheated us over the entire 120.

I appreciate the passion Easy 10 but I still think we gave our best but tactically we should not try and defend 1 - 0 leads.

I'm not saying the effort wasn't there B H.

It just had me utterly tearing my hair out at the utter ineptitude of our team in terms of passing and retaining the ball. Time and time again, we had our "best players" receiving the ball, with time and space, and simply presenting it to a red shirt. That is simply UNACCEPTABLE from what we are calling our "world class" players. It put us on the back foot for almosty the entire game.

We got a dream start through a defensive error, but were simply incapable of making the most of it, and building on it. Instead, we surrendered possession for the rest of the match, and defeat was almost inevitable.

Its not just defending 1-0 leads. When we need BACKBONE, it goes missing. When we need GALVANISING, there is no-one in the team who provides it. When we need someone to slow things down and find a white shirt, we give it away.

I am so gutted and disillusioned tonight. f*** England. f*** Em'. They ALWAYS let us down.

England were beaten by a better team. England are not the best team in the world, and don't have the right to win every game. I understand people are upset, but get a grip with reality.

The lads are not a disgrace, they did the best they can. The England performances in this tournament were the best I've seen in a long time. We don't have the best players, but Sven brought the best out of them and in the end that still wasn't enough.

My only criticism is that Sven is too defensive, and why the f*** was Phil Neville playing?

Perhaps the whole 'depth of squad' thing that Prem clubs are going for now - the 'squad rotation' - might be applied to the National team ?
That England were somewhat knackered for all the second half, and could not turn the game their way until after Portugal let them, could have been avoided if there were fresher legs out there for this game. Portugal were bringing on some of their top players as subs ferchrissakes!

We are destined to watch history repeat in every tournament, until we do something less predictable - and become less of a known quantity.

NO team should ever try defending 1-goal leads. I can't remember ever seeing a side successfully absorb relentless pressure or play out 80 minutes with a slender lead, it never bloody works.

We are out of another tournament, and I don't know if we'll ever win another trophy in my lifetime. I was 10 for the 1966 WC final and had better savour that memory!

Easy has it spot on. The full backs and Campbell were class, the strikers ran their socks off, and Lampard at least tried, but honestly ... Scholes & Beckham - if you're not got to put in the effort, GO HOME!!! Awful, utter unprofessional crap, we resorted to lumping it skywards when there were easy balls on, giving it straight to the Portugese, who ran straight back at us and made Gerrard and Lampard, who took the whole responsibility of the midfield on their shoulders, even more tired:censored:

Sorry, how dare i disagree with one of NSC's greatest posters!!!

That's what I love about this board,as soon as anything ever happens someone comes on here and starts blaming someone for it.

FFS it's our National team, you CAN'T ignore the disallowed goal the bottom line is however badly we played we should still have won the game but for a shit decision by the ref. How many times last season did we "Mug" other sides? I didn't hear much complaing then.

You have to remember that Portugal are the HOST NATION. It gave them an extra sense of urgency and passion. If we'd been 1 - 0 down during Euro 1996 we would have been bloody well up and at 'em - and that's exactly what they did.

They were never going to let is sit on the ball and stroke it around - especially after we got the early goal. I lost count of the numbers of times we got dispossessed in midfield - it wasn't just that the passing was fairly woeful at times - it was the fact that very few Portuguese players were just strolling around like they normally do.
