Emlyn Hughes dies

Just saw the headline on the BBC site, so naturally came straight here.

I was fortunate to watch him play in the great Liverpool teams of the past when they dominated Europe. I remember him as being a fair player, and he seemed a genuinely nice guy, with a real love of life.

Goodbye Emelyn.

Thoughts are with his family, of course.

But find it hard to muster up any sympathy for the man himself.

RIP, bit before my time in terms of seeing him play but wasn't he supposed to be deeply unpopular in the Anfield dressing room, where the hardmen - Souness, Mcdermott and others thought he was a complete cock?

Always came across as making the most of life and living it with a smile on his face. Something a lot of todays prima donnas could do with emulating.

A sad day indeed. RIP Emlyn.

God bless Emlyn.
If my memory serves me correctly, he played in the most frustrating game that I have watched. My mum and dad had to go to North Lancing County Primary School for my parents' evening. It was October 13th, 1973. England needed to beat Poland, at Wembley, to qualify for the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany. I was left at home with Melody, the babysitter. As the boys in white laid siege on the Polish goal, without success, I jumped around the living-room like a demented puppet. When Poland scored, I threw a cushion at the girl. When Allan Clarke equalised, I threw a cushion at the television. When the final whistle was blown, I cried and was told not to behave like a baby. When my parents returned to the house, my expectant dad asked me what was the score. "One-all," I replied miserably. "Don't lie to me, son," my dad said. "It was one-all," Melody said, whereupon, as if the failure of Ramsey's boys had been my fault, I was sent, without ceremony, up the stairs to my bed.
Thanks for the memories, Emlyn.

I loved him as an England player and appreciated his skill for Liverpool.

Great at QOS and his giggle was infectious.

I feel very sad today with this news and the JP news

I've got this ancient video - BBC's 101 great goals... Emlyn Hughes scores this blinder for Liverpool in the 70's and for some reason you can clearly hear his celebration... and it's simple, and it's loud, and it's CLASS!!!

"YES! YES! FUCKIN' YES!"

To this day that's the same reaction I shout when we score...

He expected to win every game. Who has lifted more silverware? A great loss to the game.

Hughes was a legend and a sad loss. He seemed to live life as it was meant to be lived.

And I'll never forget that 30 yarder he scored and on the telly you could hear his high pitched squeal above the roar of the crowd. Pure comedy.
