No Idea...I even rang NTL as my email just wouldn't work with Norton. They tried and said, sorry nothing we can do.
Got rid of Norton and now it's cool.
But as to why yours stopped working......

Don't use a service that was ever, ever owned by Dixons :p

Looks like a Windows issue to me, so try mail2web.com to see if it can connect with the server. If not, somethings up at Freeserve's end

Another possibility is that they no longer allow SSL encrypted connections - go in to the settings and turn encryption off. Not many ISP's allow SSL encrypted email connections.

Youve got to reconfigure your firewall to admit POP via port 110 and with the POP IP address.

Most firewalls allow this by default, which is why I didn't think of it :dunce:

But yes, if you've just installed a firewall, particularly NorCrap, that could very easily be the caust

Norton is the spawn of satan.

Thought that was Apple? ;)

No, Apple are a close second.

Norton Antivirus for the Macintosh is, however, so evil as to require a movie starring Ellen Burstyn made every time its run...

That said, its not like its been useless recently has it? Not quite so secure is the old OS X...

Times (p3) says there is a problem with a Norton update sent to AOL customers which should be resolved to day. Maybe freeserve too?

There was something about this on Always Skint.
