Extended interview on radio 5 today. At first David Elleray wouldn't be drawn said he supported no club but had first watched Dover as he grew up there. When asked which result he looked for first he admitted it was Brighton.

Wow, so the Harrow Schoolmaster is a closet Seagull...didn't he referee a match at Withdean a couple of seasons ago when there was no Premiership fixtures ? Anyone know who it was against and what the score was ?

His reason was that his grandparents came from Brighton. He then went on to say that he looked for Oxford's result next because of his student days there.

Surprisingly he claimed that he liked Roy Keane but disliked Shearer and Anderton as they were whingers.

Pitch: Slippery. Very poor.

Without looking at that link (it probably tells us on there) was that the game where someone had to plug a bloody great big hole in the pitch with a bucket of sand?

Great at Withdean, innit? Two years of playing on a bog, win two championships. Employ a groundsman, play on a billiards table, get relegated...

THE OLD PHAROSIANS'

NEWS LETTER

CORRESPONDENCE

NEWS OF OLD PHAROSIANS

David Ellery (1966-73) continues to control professional football matches. A Devon paper includes in its report of Plymouth Argyle v. Hull—"Harrow referee David Elleray, having already booked Andy Saville for not retreating 10 yards for a free kick, flashed the yellow card when Heard again bundled Hodges over. Peter Skipper (dissent) then became his third booking in 25 minutes." There have been later newspaper references to "Mr Elleray's distaste for colourful language."

Some things have never changed......

Ah - the game where Ferret started his anti-Kuipers vendetta (later retracted when it came to light that the FDM is, in fact, an absolute legend).

According to that report, Kuipers own goal was the first Albion had conceded in almost exactly 600 hours. Now that's what I call a defence.

He also reffed our game away at Bristol City in the 2001/02 season. Send Brian Tinnion off in the second half for a foul on Gary Hart as we ran out 1-0 winners.

I was at the Bristol game and have to say that Elleray gave a text book performance.

No, because I'm not a completely sad **** (I was also very, very drunk that day). :)

bhaexpress, you are correct, it was a very good performance. You can definitely tell when a ref from a higher league is in charge. During the same season Uriah Rene (sp?) officiated our game away at Huddersfield and apart from playing waaaay too much injury time, you couldn't fault him either.
