So in answer to your questions, up to 103hrs & yes.
I've got a Philips - its just a dvd recorder, no hard drive.
But, the one advantage I find is that it uses the +R and +RW discs rather than the - format which means the recorded discs can be played back on any dvd player
I've got the Panasonic version - fantastic piece of kit.
Some people have them constantly recording whenever watching TV in order to give you the ability to pause live TV, rewind etc. (It's not actually quite live, you'll be about 5-7 seconds in delay)
