Downloaded a couple of things (nothing illegal) and want to burn them to DVD. Both items are XVID format(?) with mp3 audio.

Tried burning one using Roxio 8-it whirred away for over an hour, spat the DVD out and none of my DVD players could read it.

I know somebody else was asking for similar help but I can't find it...can anybody help please?

Maybe the DVD type you're using to burn. I recently bought a whole load of dual layer DVD+R's which I burnt on my PC then found my domestic Pioneer DVD Recorder won't read any kind of DVD+R's at all, only DVD-R's. It may be the DVD recorded fine. What DVD type are you using and what DVD player are you trying to playback on?

Sounds like it's probably DivX format you're referring to. Not all DVD players read DivX format. None of mine do.
One way round it is to burn to a DVD-RW, if you're bothered about wasting a DVD-R disc. Then rip from that using DVD Decrypter, and re-burn using DVD Shrink. Then the DivX format will be removed.
There might be a quicker way, but I don't know of one that will be reliable. Format converters always seem to cock up and make things go out of sync.

get a copy of NERO, It will convert and write.

Probably available at the same place you downloaded your 'not illegal' movies.

From my experience, Nero will convert an AVI or MPEG to DVD but will retain the DivX format. Nero is crap at handling video anyway. The number of coasters I used to have with out of sync video was ridiculous.

use a program called dvd santa. will convert it to the vob and video ts files needed to play on dvd player. a 2 hour film normally takes about 2.5 hours to convert.then just burn it to dvd using your prefered burning program. while the conversion process is taking place its best not to use your pc as this can lead to sync problems.

Doubt it, XVID is a seperate (but highly similar) format.

Both are based on MPEG-4 Part 3 Advanced Simple Profile, but neither is an exact implementation and both vary </geek>

And nearly no DVD player in the world supports XVID - if only down to the codec ID being "XVID" and not "DX50"

To get it as a proper DVD, do what the scouser just said ;) Or follow any of the other advice in this thread.
