Pakistanis continue to haunt Harmison

Sussex (119-2) lead Durham (110) by nine runs

Pakistan have never been Steve Harmison's favourite opponents and after being upstaged by Shoaib Akhtar during the winter, he suffered by comparison with Rana Naved-ul-Hasan yesterday. However, the real difference between two sides who began the day five points apart at the top of Division One was another Pakistani whose Test career appears to be over.

Mushtaq Ahmed was hit for two fours each by Harmison and Phil Mustard but was otherwise unfathomable to the Durham batsmen as he finished with five for 25, taking his first four wickets with googlies.

Rana had four for 28 as the Pakistani pair took their combined total of championship wickets to 55, leaving Dale Benkenstein to rue his decision to bat when play began at noon on a ground which had been under water the previous day.

Harmison's luckless search for his first championship wicket since his return from injury last week then continued when he had Carl Hopkinson dropped at first slip.

A couple of balls flew past the bat, but on a pitch demanding accuracy rather than the pace preferred by Durham, the Sussex openers picked off Harmison without much difficulty in reaching 57. Both fell at that total, Richard Montgomerie surrendering to a top-edged pull off Mick Lewis's leg-side long hop.

Three of Durham's top four batsmen looked unhappy with their decisions, while left-handed opener Jimmy Maher hurried away without so much as a glance at the umpire after becoming the only batsman not to fall to the Pakistanis. A fine ball from Luke Wright, retained at the expense of James Kirtley, left him off the pitch to take the edge.

When Mushtaq came on to work his magic, left-handers Gary Pratt and Mustard went pushing forward, Benkenstein and Gareth Breese were lbw and Harmison was bowled on the drive after an entertaining innings featuring paddles, sweeps and a perfectly executed reverse sweep.

Maher and Jon Lewis looked reasonably comfortable until the ball went out of shape and was changed in the fifth over.

Lewis was then immediately adjudged lbw to Rana and in the paceman's next over, Gordon Muchall was given out caught behind. Pratt waited for the verdict when taken at slip, but there could be little argument with any of the decisions in Mushtaq's favour.

I've always thought he tends towards hyperbole when writing about the performances of a certain R. Martin-Jenkins.
