I'm buying one tonight, so I promise this is my last stooopid question.

Apple - i-stuff, games, tunes, apps etc.

HTC, et al - Android, games, music, apps etc.

Nokia - Windows, games, music, apps etc.

Blackberry - they are not featuring, not getting one.

1) None are compatible any of the others?

2) Apple is the market leader, so has the most, stuff?
3) Android second and closing fast, for quantity and quality?
4) Leaving Windows, new and last?

5) Does Windows have any room in the market to develop, or are they the 21st century Betamax?

My current Samsung Tocco is on its last legs, so I'm interested in what people think too. Hopefully be getting a new and better one for Christmas.

Actually Android is top of the market now with a 75% share. As a result Android has the most apps but it doesn't yet have any killer hardware as desirable as the iPhone, although the Samsung Galaxy S3 is very close.

Windows Phone is actually very good, and the Nokia Lumias are excellent devices, but you won't have ANYWHERE NEAR the amount of choice you get with Android or iOS and for that reason I'd avoid it.

Android if you want best all round value and performance. Apple if you want something beautiful

It depends what you mean by compatible.

They will all play the same files for music and video etc.

However you can't transfer an app you've bought from Apple's app store to your Android device or vice versa.

In this sense, if you've invested money in one ecosystem then it makes sense to stick with it to save losing the apps you've purchased. Bear in mind however that a huge proportion of apps are free and exist on both iOS and Android so in that respect having an Apple version of Instagram, say, won't stop you from downloading and using the Android version of Instagram, and you wouldn't lose any of your personal settings etc. which are generally cloud based

I'm with you, which is why I have never ventured into this market before.
Hence all the fookin stupid question.
I appreciate how patient NSC as a collective have been with me through this trying time!

Get the best,i am sure you will
This is my problem I don't want to get the best, because I don't want to shell out the cash for something I don't need, or can be bothered to fully understand.
Which seems to be leading me to the Lumia, great reviews, all saying it's a good starter phone.
But without getting into a massive 'this that and the other' debate I just want to know if Lumia = Lemon or not.

If people carried little transistor radios on the train we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I have a Lumia 800 and it is absolutely wonderful.

If it just had all the apps I use on my Android powered HTC I would use it for everything.

As a phone the Nokia Lumias are absolutely excellent. It's top of the range kit that's built to the highest standard and runs a very capable and simple operating system. It only falls down by way of not having all the apps that Android and Apple devices can enjoy. But if you genuinely don't envisage using 3rd party apps then get yourself a Lumia.

It's worth noting that some of the Nokia specific applications that come pre-loaded on the Lumias are peerless. Their navigation and mapping software is, dare I say it, even better than the mighty Google. You need to ask yourself, specifically, what will you be asking your phone to do on a regular basis?

Why does best have to mean expensive-Blackberry for me is best, not for you,but they can be relatively cheaper

OK what I was getting at is that you cannot transfer apps from one type of phone (Android/Apple/Windows) to another HOWEVER the same apps are often available on each platform (although usually just Android and Apple's iOS) and if you have an app you like on your Apple phone and then want to use that same app on an Android phone you've upgraded to, then a lot of the time you can just download the same app for your new phone and it will work fine.

Posting even more on NSC

General t'internet stuff, NSC, twitter, games for me and the kids, camera nothing special.

Most of the time I'm listening to podcasts which obviously I already have covered, so an I-phone seems too extravagant as I already have that covered.

Back to basics of phones and not apps etc-Seems to me it's either touch big and small or blackberry & imitations style, what happened to clamshell or candy bar phones

WAIT!!!

...for the Google Nexus 4 out in a week!

Nexus 4
Lumia = £150 cheaper.

If I'd been on this gravy train for as long as everyone else, I would probably understand the value.
But as I'm about 5 years behind I'll stay in the shallow pool for a while!

Out of curiosity, where have you found the new Nokia Lumia 920 for 90 pounds ???
And there's the problem.
This is one of the reasons why I haven't bought into the notion of a phone that does everything, because once you do, 'they' have got you.
Which is why I haven't got a clue what's going on now

The assumption that everyone MUST HAVE the new latest bestest trinket going, even though it's almost identical to the last £300 piece of kit you brought 6 months ago.

The 610 is £90, and it was plenty good enough a year ago.

Edit - Sorry that reads like a personal attack, it isn't, just a rant in general

That's completely fair enough, my apologies, I was thinking you meant 'Lumia' as in the new one.

Agreed, for example my missus' iPhone 3gs (at about 99 pounds) can perform around 85% of the tasks the new iPhone 5 (at 500 pounds) can.

Just my advise, take it or leave it. I'd 110% recommend going for an Android or Apple device over a Windows phone. You will get a lot more out of it and you won't have to pay any more money for one of these devices.

Oh and I also want it to record my dogs farts, and post them here.

He's at it again now.
But he obviously hasn't eaten anything dead and rotting today, so it's not toxic or worthy of a thread bounce.
