DUKE OF YORK'S 100 years old..........

When I was a kid in the 1970s the Dukes was owned by a bloke called (IIRC) Peter Drew-Bear and a friend of my mum's worked part time there as his handyman. I could go anytime I wanted and get in free.
I also remember a gig there once when Simon Townshend, Pete's brother and his band played and a load of numties smashed up the seats.
I may be wrong, but I seem to remember going to a late night showing of Life of Brian and I've never laughed so much before or since.

I think most of the Drew-Bear family worked here david was a projectionist i believe.

Oh, and while we've got your ear Goodfella, can you make sure the DoY never again sticks two fingers up to the members and shows whatever the next Sex & The City 2 is for a fortnight solid. That was unworthy and smacked of selling out. Expected better, to be honest.

Unfortunately mr Preston park, the cinema would not be able to be 100 years old, unless now and then we put trash on like this, we cannot survive just by showing independant films. the kind of revenue we made on this one keeps us afloat for another 6 months.

Went there last night, Tamara Drew which is much better than I expected. As an aside, the pear and praline cake was lovely. Wanting to see the extended Metropolis as well.

Read your interview in the Argus - bit surprised to see you say Brighton hadn't had an art-house cinema before the DoY started showing those films in the 80s. I think the Brighton Film Theatre was well ahead of you and, although this was before my time, I believe the Continentale used to show art-house cinema before it became a place for skin-flicks.

Enjoyed the kids show this morning BTW - that coffee and walnut cake was the biz.

I never actually said we had never had an art cinema, i have been misquoted, i said there had never been an art cinema doin what the duke of yorks was doing, which was much more varied than the Brighton Film Theatre, which basically showed the more 'POPULAR' art films of the time.

Always reminds me off me & my sister being dropped off there while my Mum went to the pub with her fella. I can never forget one night in the 70's we had to endure a double bill of The Student Prince, & 7 Brides for 7 Brothers.
Nights like that scar you for life!
