Not sure I like the idea of the moving tower. Imagine, you're just about to doze off and the idiot above you is not only having a party but spinning his whole bloody appartment round all night.

Out of those I've only seen Canary Wharf and the Empire State in the flesh. I can't imagine something nearly twice the height of the Empire State Building.

Frightening.

It's currently over twice the height of Empire State and growing!

They are also looking at building the worlds first carbon neutral town. One of my good mates brothers is going out to help on the project.

what is that bulilding which looks like a giant ice cream splatterd into the ground upside down/sink plunger to the right of the pic? is it a mosque?

Where some see a waste of money, others see an iconic building that's a glimpse into future design.

Dubai's always going to polarise people. I love it here - far away from the overly negative, world-weary and cynical attitudes that pervade much of modern-day Britain.

Dubai must be just one giant piss take for architects right now.

"Your Excellency, behold, I have designed this 2000m high, translucent pink glass tower, complete with an illuminated bellchamber, if you will, at the top, two large spherical conference centres at either side of the base, and some landscaped vegetation around the bottom. Some people say that men designing tall buildings is a classic example of Freudian psychology at work, but I beg to differ".

Sheikh: "How much money do you need?"

Architect: "$800 billion. I call it the Crystal Phallus, by the way"

Is it an urban myth or true that many of San Francisco's skyscrapers are built on ballbearing type foundations that allow the buildings to move in the event of an earthquake? Anyone know?

its true

What a MESS that place is. Like Croydon with sand.

It's true that there are some built-up areas in Dubai (e.g. Satwa) that weren't initially well planned due to lack of foresight on what Dubai will become, but they'll be knocking them down soon and starting again. The photo shows the skyscraper development along Sheikh Zayed Road.

Dubai's Metro is scheduled to be completed in about a year's time - this should alleviate much of the traffic congestion on Dubai's roads that SALIK (the newly introduced toll system) hasn't reduced.

Dubai in generally is spotlessly clean - little if any unsightly rubbish or graffiti, immaculately maintained parks and shopping malls, etc.

Like it or loathe it, one can't ignore what's going on in the likes of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha.

Croydon it is not.

Pah! THIS skyscraper is planned for London - http://popularchitecture.com/supertower/ - far more exciting (and weird), with public parks, ice rinks, swimming pools etc all the way up. A whopping 1.5km high, that's more than TWICE the size of any towers currently under construction (including that jobby in Dubai) it'll get its drinking water from the clouds. And you could (if you knock back a few dozen bottles of Lucozade) walk up the spiral path that goes from top to bottom. Alternatively, the lifts will be the size of train carriages

Playing open air tennis on the 348th floor is going to be a barrel of laughs. Bet there won't be a breath of wind up that high...

The difference between London and Dubai is their fanciful ideas actually get BUILT, instead of just looking good in CGI form on some architect's website.

No offence but it all seems pretty soulless to me but then I do like a bit of DIRT, in all aspects of life.

I have friends who live in Dubai. when we visited we saw a lot of the city but also got out to the desert and visited friends who worked at a desert wildlife sanctuary. It is a fascinating place and as mentioned extremely well maintained. Just find it a bit vulgar in places.
