If Muslims didn't mind, would they do it? Of course not, it's purely to wind them up. And people wonder why there are a large number of young Muslims growing up thinking 'the west' hate them.

Please don't make excuses for those who strap bombs to their chest or those who go to Syria to fight or be used. Tolerance meets in the middle, we tolerate each other in this world, quite simply there is a minority who are unable to practice tolerance to any degree. How many Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs or non believers are responsible for singling out those of other faiths and taking life on such a scale as we are seeing currently?

Christianity has been attributed in the region of 40 million lives over the years so you need to be careful with such statements.

Muslims need to understand that the actions of a few do not mean they're hated by everyone, just like we need to understand that the acts of some Muslims doesn't mean that all Muslims hate us.

Imagine you're a young boy growing up in a staunchly Muslim country such as Libya or Morocco. You might have limited access to TV and foreign media, you have a limited education and mostly you believe what you hear from others around you. Then think people will tell them (or they'll hear rumours) that in America they have contests where everyone comes to draw Mohammed because they think Muslims are evil. The little boy won't think 'ah, the actions of a few inbiciles', he'll probably think everyone in the west hates his type. This leads to harder things, such as when America drops bombs on a middle eastern country it's not such a great leap for the young boy (now a young man) to think America and the west are persecuting his people.

That boy is going to be mislead regardless of what we do. We shouldn't have to change what we do just because we're worried about the propaganda in another country.

Obviously no excuse for the gunmen, they deserved what they got. But this event, organised by a known Islamaphobe was surely all about stirring the pot of controvesy and furthering her own agenda. The gunmen took the bait and a guard ,who was just there as his job, was injured... this is wonderful for the Tea Party extremist Yanks...
Thank God, in this country we have laws against hate-speech

Hardly. Sounds like the event was organised to be racially offensive to Islam. I'm not suggesting violence is the answer but the group who organised this event need to take a long hard look at themselves. I would hope they'd be arrested for inciting racial hatred.

If Pam Geller has to do with any of it, its a given.

Is there not a case for respecting the sensitivities of a religious group?

It was a private event held behind closed doors.

Now if they'd chucked posters up on the gates of the local mosque your point may have some relevance, especially to the apologists.

I take it the prizes would have been assault rifles and ammo ,along with a bullet proof vest and plastic surgery ?

Sunday's event was organised by the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), which is run by controversial blogger and activist Pamela Geller and is listed as an anti-Muslim group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights group...
An anti-Muslim civil rights group

...Speaking before Sunday's event, Ms Geller told AP news agency that the aim of the contest was to make a stand for free speech.

Just because you can, it doesn't mean you should.

A bit more about Pamela Geller, courtesy of Wikipedia:

'In June 2013, Geller was scheduled to speak at an EDL rally, but was barred from entering Britain by a Home Office ruling that describes her as having established "anti-Muslim hate groups".'

Idiots, all of them.

If they had wanted to make a point, then they should have held a draw Jesus Christ, Buddha etc competition and the highlighted the enforced absence of Big Mo.

Or the gunmen could have organised a revenge draw Jesus competition instead of going out to kill people.

In Texas, that's likely to induce a gun toting blood bath of blasphemy...

... oh, hang on....
