You know the old adage about how when a company gives you crap service you tell 9 other people? Well I'm going to try to beat that. If any NSC'ers are headed to the States in the near future PLEASE don't use this dreadful company. The edited version is I called them this afternoon as a courtesy to let them know about a flight delay and how my Dad would not now be picking up his car from Jacksonville airport until tomorrow. "Ok that will be an extra $40" Me - "erm really. Why?" Muppet : "For the extra day"

It went downhill from there and I won't bore you with the rest of it but suffice to say that if Dollar were a hair colour they would be ginger. If they were a beer they would be Miller Lite and if they were a football club they would be Portsmouth.

In short and in the local vernacular they SUCK. Avoid at all costs.

Thanks for listening to my rant!

Never found someone that can actually beat Hertz on price and flexibility (e.g. having somewhere for me to dump a car back at 10pm on a Sunday) but I'll bear that in mind if Dollar appear cheaper at some point in the future.

Charging extra for the car not being used when you're already paying by the day - would be like Ryanair charging you for not using a flight and paying for another, basically.

Now I've only got good things to say about my local Avis on the other hand. Back to another snippet of the phone call if you'll indulge me. I asked them is there anything at all you want to try to stop me cancelling this booking and giving the business to Avis. The response?

"Thank you for calling. Is there anything else we can do for you today"?

"Wait. Did you really ask me that?"

I’ve always used Hertz and never had a problem. As it’s totally impractical to own a car in NYC I’ve used Hertz Connect if I need a car for only a few hours - they lease vehicles for 12 bucks an hour all in and a yearly membership of $50. Really good company.

I guess it would also depend on whether Hertz have any grey cars available....

That's amazing I had a similar thing happen to me, but at Tampa airport. They didn't charge me an extra $40 and gave me a free upgrade as when I got there the original car had been rented out. Makes you wonder how the service can be so different!

We used Dollar for our car in Vegas in September. Two problems. First was picking it up from the hotel took the best part of an hour. Second was that it was meant to be full of gas on pick up, but wasn't so we had to drive across town to the Dollar depot for them to fill it up. Not major issues but not helpful as we were planning a quick get away that day.

To me a statement like that is more confrontational and trying to pick a fight rather that trying to manoeuvre negotiating into your favour.

Perhaps something along the lines of “is there anything your company can do to retain this business that benefits me so I can avoid changing rental companies ?”

Along with you discriminatory derogatory comments about ginger haired people. perhaps it was you attitude maybe? Were you aggressive or soft toned seeking an resolution to the problem?

Car Rental Agent: [cheerfully] Welcome to Marathon, may I help you?
Neal: Yes.
Car Rental Agent: How may I help you?
Neal: You can start by wiping that f***ing dumb-ass smile off your rosey, f***ing, cheeks. And you can give me a f***ing automobile: a f***ing Datsun, a f***ing Toyota, a f***ing Mustang, a f***ing Buick! Four f***ing wheels and a seat.
Car Rental Agent: I really don't care for the way you're speaking to me.
Neal: And I really don't care for the way your company left me in the middle of f***ing nowhere with f***ing keys to a f***ing car that isn't f***ing there. And I really didn't care to f***ing walk, down a f***ing highway, and across a f***ing runway to get back here to have you smile in my f***ing face. I want a f***ing car RIGHT f***ing NOW.
Car Rental Agent: May I see your rental agreement?
Neal: I threw it away.
Car Rental Agent: Oh boy.
Neal: Oh boy, what?
Car Rental Agent: You're f***ed

Always had excellent service from Budget in the US, very good prices and a flexible attitude.

I'd like to take time to mention ALAMO who were absolutely superb with us.

Arrived into Orlando International with a 'budget' range car pre-booked - when we pre-booked we were told this would be large enough for 4 people with suitcases. Besides, we knew from previous experience they always upgrade everybody anyway unless really busy. When we crossed the road into the Alamo car park, we duly got upgraded to a convertible - but it wasn't large enough for our suitcases.

We went back and said this and they apologised profusely and upgraded us again - not to just a mid-size saloon but to a HUMMER H3 (about 10x the cost of the car we had paid for). Sadly, a week and a half into our holiday we had a death in the family and had to come home; and they refunded in full the remaining days of the rental (with no fees or deductions). The refunded the rate of the Hummer and not the convertible we'd paid for - so all in all a Hummer H3 for 10 days cost us approximately $50 USD in fuel.

Now THAT'S service!!

I was going to give Alamo a mention, purely as I'm an ex-employee. Huge company in the states, and used to do really good discounts if you pushed them for it. The last thing they want is to be beaten by Hertz on price.
