Americans are more safe in Mexico than they are at home. Fact.

“According to FBI crime statistics, 4.8 Americans per 100,000 were murdered in the US in 2010. The US State Department reports that 120 Americans of the 5.7 million who visited Mexico last year were murdered, which is a rate of 2.1 of 100,000 visitors. Regardless of whether they were or weren't connected to drug trafficking, which is often not clear, it's less than half the US national rate.”

Surely those figures show that Mexico is far more dangerous than the US fo Americans as they will be spending much more time in the US than Mexico. The 4.8/100,000 rate works out at just under one person per million per week. If you assume that the 5.7 million visitors spent on average two weeks in Mexico then over ten per million per week were murdered.

You
Are right the gangs have no interest targeting tourists but they won’t lose any sleep if the do , if you happen t get in their way , they will kill you without a second thought . Never ever go to Mexico if you value your life and avoid all of Central America , it’s teeming with armed gangs .

I think that is putting it a bit strong, there are places it isn't safe to wander, but that is true of many places. Much of the Caribbean has worse murder rates than Mexico. I have friends that are there now on Holiday, their 3rd visit to the country.
In Central America also Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama are not especially dodgy, and not like visiting El Salvador or Honduras.

I was going to point this out too, the statistics are actually not that favourable for the point he made.

Did they tell him to concentrate on his driving and not keep looking at his phone? Bit harsh pulling guns but hopefully a lesson learned. :)

And also tell them to wear seatbelts (but not put one on when they've come to a stop) and get some headrests? :dunce:

It's almost as if they staged it for the clicks... #Cynic

This is from 2017, compiled using even older data, and not particularly accurate, but is a guide.

From the above document.
Statistically, as a tourist, you are more likely to die in Asia than anywhere else, and most likely in a transport related incident, plane crashes, cruise boat or Ferrry sinks, bus goes off a cliff etc.
About 3% of tourist deaths globally are murders, if you exclude terror attacks, about 6% if you include terror attacks. You are about as likely to commit suicide as be shot by someone else, statistically.

I had the same thought

Thanks Hugo Rune for your sensible comments.....unlikely the gunmen were cartel guys more likely some locals trying to protect their turf, tourists are mostly sfae - though often those that do get shot especially in Cancun area are likely involved in the drug trade. Cancun, Tulum etc have unfortunately become a world center for the global drug trade - some Montreal Hells Angels got shot recently attending one of these international shin digs. So please can you all cut your drug usage and help us legalise the stuff so we can focus on developing this great country & not being the battlefield scene of the worlds drug problems........
