Someone has mentioned that if Trump wins apart from his foreign policy and his liking for Putin aside, will his victory send the economic west into a tail spin ?

I really do think, he is the Anti Christ, and will set in motion the possibility of him and his family to become dictators.

How can the Americans be so feckin stupid, my father in law a decent man, who ran a successful business and quite rational, thinks the vote was stolen from Trump, we do not talk to him about politics as it just ends in stale mate, god fearing Americans are scary.
I read Cassidy Hutchinson's 'Enough'; I still cannot forget or erase from my mind the description and behaviour of her Trump supporting father. I don't recognise such characteristics as belonging to a sentient being....

Maybe this Washington Post summary will resonate with those who have weighed up the character of the 2024 Republican candidate...

'In the background of all of this is Hutchinson's father. Her descriptions of him paint a picture of a needy, aggrieved man who delighted in mocking weakness and thrilled at considering himself a “warrior,” who demanded Hutchinson's fealty while offering jeering and insults in return'

It does seem to have a grim inevitability about it. And if he doesn't win it'll be a guaranteed re-run of his playbook in 2020: the election was stolen etc
Even if he doesn't win, he isn't going away any time soon...

Weirdly, winning means we get 4 years and then he's done. Assuming, of course, that he doesn't change the rules to allow presidents to serve more than 2 terms, then we're in real trouble

He is retired now and spends hours going down rabbit holes on the internet, he sends our daughter messages about god and jebus once a week.
He won't talk to me about politics or religion, as he knows my back ground (Grandad was a priest in Hove) and what I think of his born again crazy church (I went once) and that I am non religious.
If you talk to him off topic, he is rational and talk about any other subject, he is well travelled and not ignorant or racist and has a good/ No great sense of humour, he just becomes a zombie on politics and religion, I cannot explain it.

I can only think that he has the same relationship with 'Trumpism' as he does with his faith. Blind faith and obedience rather than rational coherent reflection....

The Trump Train is on a roll, we've seen before it's hard to stop.

They are going to vote the clown in again unless something major happens

Sadly you are right.

I just do not get why you can not see Trumps game, it is so obvious and divisive, he is not America great again, he is dividing it, with world wide ramifications.

a) Socialism does exclude individuals owning businesses worth that much.
b) But if Bloom were able to own it and had to share all the profits with the rest of society, then he wouldn't have been able to build the club as he has.
Your definition of socialism does not need to match mine or anybody else's. To be frank, I'm not interested in debating it any further. I responded to a specific comment last night, if I were interested in debating this sort of ecumenical matter over the course of multiple days I'd join the SWP. Or maybe become a priest.
With regards your second point, if we did live in a socialist society all the other clubs would be working under the same conditions. It's likely that the costs associated with player purchases and wages would all be significantly reduced, since while I can cope with people accruing a fortune by developing their business and assets within a socialist society, I find getting paid hundreds of thousands of pounds a week to kick a ball around a step too far.
That being the case, it'd be much easier for a local businessman to stick some meaningful money into their club because whatever money they have would go a lot further.

Exchange betting for next POTAS:

Convicted sex offending old man utter nutter 2.36
Old man who shouldn't be trusted to choose his favourite ice cream flavour 2.9
Right wing lady who isn't a convicted sex offender but probably still a nutter 11.5
It's laughable it's come to this

Neither are a great option, but at least if it was a Newsome v Desantis you could trust them not to fall over walking up stairs.

Sorry for naive question, but is Biden a shoe-in as the Democrat candidate by being the incumbent, or does he have to win nominations as well? Seems like they might need to roll the dice and put a fresh face up judging by polling figures of an assumed Biden v Trump contest.

Part of me is thinking if Trump doesn’t get elected then America could be facing civil strife akin to a civil war. My UKIP, Farage, Trump loving neighbour told me America was heading this way back in 2016 - he literally said there will be a civil war - the way he said it it sounded like there were political forces at work that were deliberately undermining the stability of American society and Farage and Trump were in full cohorts with it. I did think ‘Russia’ but that would that would be a conspiracy too far.

I’m going to be on holiday in Pennsylvania 4 weeks before the election, I think my lip will be extensively bitten all week long.

pretty much. they'll have a convention in the summer to nominate the candidate, but will be a coronation for Democrats. it's unusual for a incumbant to be challenged internally. it could have happened, as i understand its getting too late now as they dont have the primaries to decide on an alternative. unless something happens to Biden in the next few months to change (not completely unlikely).

Donald Trump as next US president it looks like from here, and I say that as someone who previously believed he was too divisive to pick up new votes.

The problem is that he doesn’t need to, there’s enough disillusionment with Biden (despite the fact that from an international perspective he’s steered a fairly steady course) that he’s not going to enjoy the same number of votes as last time, and the Democrats have (IMO) blundered badly by not getting somebody under the age of 60 in as replacement.

I find it unfathomable that on both sides there’s such an absolute void of available talent. And worst of all it’s Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine that American voters are going to sell down the river.

I'm starting to think there are similarities between the US electorate and Russia...is that too extreme??? At least the US threw out the challenges of the 'stolen vote ' I guess.
If the major cities were the only vote then Biden would probably get back in. But the huge numbers in rural communities, very religious (allegedly), happy to believe conspiracy theories all the time, and certainly believe the propaganda that Trump and his supporters have fed them for decades.

He can do a lot of damage in four years.
Oh, unquestionably. He has no qualms riding roughshod over any institutions or guardrails in his way and would think nothing of urinating on the constitution.

I guess my point is, if he's in for four, he's out after that point whereas is he doesn't win he'll be a constant malignant spectre in the rear view mirror of US politics.

To be clear though, I'm in no way advocating a return to office, but the US seem incapable of rejecting him

it is not a given - the Republican voters in Iowa (upto 75% of Rep voters) are predominantly Evangelical Christians so it is unsurprising that he has done so well since he’s worked very hard at cultivating that base in Iowa - hopefully that will not be reflected nationally.

I agree he will ‘sell’ the Ukrainians down the river and put pressure on Zelenskyy to concede part of Ukraine he already did that with the Palestinians and his Abraham Accords - inflaming Muslim relations in the ME to breaking point and a precursor to the current war- his undermining of NATO and cosying up to dictators like Putin and Kim is an existential threat to us all as is his climate change denying policies on the environment.

What I find increasingly surprising given the hatred he has generated and the threats to American democracy he’s not had any assassination attempts against him - but then the mad fcukers who have been responsible for Presidential assassination attempts in the past are probably the very type of
people that are Trump supporters today.

Well it kinda does, otherwise people use words incorrectly and no one knows what they mean.

To be frank, I'm not interested in debating it any further.

Yep, and the best players in the world wouldn't come here.

Anyway, back to the wonderful Trump
