Lot's of Counties have their own county Flags...

Yorkshire has a Flag!
Lancashire has a Flag!
Cornwall has a Flag!
Devon has a Flag!
Dorset has a Flag!
Gloucestershire has a Flag!
Buckinghamshire has a Flag!
Bedfordshire has a Flag!
Berkshire has a Flag!
Derbyshire has a Flag!
Essex has a Flag!
Hampshire has a Flag!
Kent has a Flag!
Lincolnshire has a Flag!
Pembrokshire has a Flag!
Middlesex has a Flag!
Northumberland has a Flag!
Somerset has a Flag!
Sulfolk has a Flag!
Wiltshire has a Flag!
Staffordshire has a Flag!

So Why Doesn't Sussex have their own flag?

Here are some of my designs...

Im sure it did when it was a county, but now it has two. btw, your designs are clearly discriminating against the East (and superior) half which uses red background.

i am from east sussex

u could say the Sussex FA, Sussex CCC and Sussex Police are discriminating against the East because they have dark blue and gold as their colours so that's why i chose blue and gold!

There has NEVER been an administrative county called "Sussex".

The last time that Sussex was administered as a single entity, it was a KINGDOM.

Totally, any flag that incorporates 'the scum' (i.e. any person/animal/town/thing that has the misfortune to be located in West Sussex) should be burnt on sight!

EAST SUSSEX LA LA LA West Sussex is just an embarrassment to us Easterners tbh. Worthing, Shoreham, Lancing etc. I'd rather live in Croydon!

:p

I reckon we should go back to being a kingdom, declare independence and all that. The Albion could be our national team and compete in the World Cup...hang on a minute, the nurse wants to give me more of the tablets.

well there you go. but i thought east/west sussex was a relatively modern thing? so was it a Kingdom up until that time?

Blue and Red stripes?
which is why this issue is best left well alone.

Really? My birth certificate says I was born in Sussex (not West) and I thought it was one county until 1973. Were there always 2 councils then?

Oh - and when did Brighton cede from Sussex control?

(genuine questions - I'm not trying to be arsey  )

When I was a child (ashamedly living on the Dark Side until we moved to Lewes in 1965), nobody ever differentiated between West and East Sussex. The two counties might have existed but postal addresses were just "Sussex".

County Councils first came into existence in 1889. From that year, there were always separate County Councils for West Sussex and East Sussex. Brighton was a County Borough from 1889, and was only brought under the administrative control of East Sussex County Council in 1974. The area that is controlled by Mid Sussex District Council (Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and East Grinstead) was run by East Sussex County Council until 1974, when it transferred to West Sussex. Brighton and Hove Council was created in 1997 and became a City Council in 2000.

Who needs a flag when we're the only county to have it's own ANTHEM!

All together now!

1st verse

Now is the time for marching, now let your hearts be gay

Hark to the merry bugles sounding along our way.

So let your voices ring my boys, and take the time from me

And I’ll sing you a song as we march along

Of Sussex by the sea

Chorus

For we're the men from Sussex, Sussex by the sea

We plough and sow and reap and mow

And useful men are we

So when you go to Sussex, whoever you may be,

You can tell them all that we stand or fall

For Sussex by the sea

Refrain

Sussex, Sussex by the sea

Good old Sussex by the sea!

You may tell them all we stand or fall

For Sussex by the sea..

2nd verse

Up in the morning early, start at the break of day

March till the evening shadows, tell us it's time to stay.

We're always moving on me boys, so take your time from me

And sing this song as we march along,

Of Sussex by the sea.

3rd verse

Light is the love of a soldier; that's what the ladies say

Lightly he goes a wooing, lightly he rides away

In love and war, we always are as fair as fair can be

And a soldier boy is the ladies joy

In Sussex by the sea

4th verse

Far o'er the seas we soldier, wide through the world we roam

Far from the kind hearts yonder, far from our dear old homes

But ne'er shall we forget, my boys, and true we'll ever be.

To the girls so kind that we left behind

In Sussex by the sea

5th verse

Sometimes your feet are weary, sometimes the way is long,

Sometimes the day is dreary, sometimes the world goes wrong.

But if you let your voices ring, your cares will fly away,

So we'll sing you a song as we march along

Of Sussex by the sea

The last King of Sussex seems to have been King Osmund, who seems to have died in about 771. After that, we became part of the Kingdom of Wessex.

So if we were independent, we'd logically have Prince Edward (as Earl of Wessex) as our King? Thanks, but I'll pass...

i've seen a flag of west sussex. the top third is light yellow, the bottom 2 thirds are sky blue with the martlets (sp.) in gold on the blue.

that is why sussex played in sky blue and yellow back in the nineties when they had those coloured shirts ... i thought that anyway.

i've never seen that red and gold flag and i'm brighton b&b.

And we're the only county with it's own official game:

STOOLBALL.

Which I think is really cool. I used to love playing stoolball when I was little.
