because people with a clue obviously think he does have potential. and he has shown that he has potential, at least, by being prolific in reserves and youth team. that may not be the same as playing league football, but banging them in at that level obviously shows potential. you don't need to prove yourself to have potential to succeed.

maybe he did, but i doubt you really have a clue about his ability in either sport. you have just criticised him because he has not developed as everyone hoped he would. maybe he will come good, maybe not. but to say he has no potential is a little bit silly really.

He'll be 21 in a couple of months. OK, thats not exactly over the hill, but there are quite a few players younger than that playing at this level and higher who HAVE already proved themselves. I just havn't seen any signs that he can really cut it in the third division.

I would LOVE to be proved completely and utterly wrong. If I thought he could do a job in the first team, it'd be great to have another option up front. But there comes a point where you have to stop being nice about players and "hoping" they're going to do the business, when all the signs so far with his track record point to the fact that he's just not really quite going to be good enough.

Ok, I'll change it, I don't think he has much potential, and I do have a clue, I have been told by several people he is a good cricketer.
And no he will not come good, why do people continue to persist with him, he had his chances, he's not good enough.

Well put.

It's all looking like the end for Gatting as far as being a pro is concerned, It's a bit of a shame really because like a lot of people I thought he had potential but he just has'nt progressed the way he needed to. I'm sure we've got some curse on our young strikers that come through the youth ranks.

he is a very good cricketer, played for south england U18s when he was 15. could play at county level now.

continue to persist? he hasn't exactly had a run in the first team to build up some confidence.. (other than when a couple of seasons ago he played about 6 or 7 games and scored 4)

but yeah, you know best, as always.

"Just read the match report,,,,,,,,,,,,,we must get rid of Gatting, we are paying him wages, and he continues to be a complete waste of time. Not just going on todays report but from previous matches I have witnessed , rather play with 10 men than have him in the side.
From what I have seen this season he could,nt give a TOSS. "

Quoted from the Bognor fans forum, i would like to hear their manager's opinion of him as well.

Somebody actually said that?? The only person Gatting is better than is my nan! I cannot believe people can even possibly slightly believe he has any sort of potential in football. So no, my answer is no I don't think he's good enough.

Indeed, some twit sounding off in the bogs at half time about how useless Murray was, I couldn't refrain from pointing out to this bloke that Murray had had no service, and asked if he'd prefer Gatting instead, to which the response was "he'll score a few goals and actually run about a bit, so yes".

I couldn't be arsed to respond to that, perhaps should have pissed on the idiot!:D

When did I say I knew best? I was stating my opinion that I don't think he's good enough, just like many other people on this post.

I feel really sorry for JG - the thing is a striker needs confidence and if everybody is constanbtly saying youre shite then it cant be good.

The times ive seen him in reserves, hes often the best palyer on pitch, very strong on ball and can hold it up. got a good volley on him too. i think we should give him a chance.

he cant be crap to bang in so many goals fro reserves and youth can he?

Yes, Yes he can. Different ball game 1st team football

Match Report from Bognor's last game (from Bognor's official site):

Chelmsford 2 Bognor 0

06-09-08

BOGNOR’S woes continued as they went down to defeat at high-flying Chelmsford.

The Rocks began their first visit to a wet Melbourne Park without Paul Watson because of his work commitments.

After a tentative opening period Chelmsford began to create opportunities, particularly on the right wing.

Sam Pearce was booked for bringing down Ricky Holmes in a dangerous position and Gary McDonald cleared well under pressure from the resulting free-kick.

Bognor almost scored after 20 minutes when a deft flick from Alex Fisher allowed Gatting a clear run on goal but the home keeper was not troubled by his laboured effort.

Minutes later Duncan Jupp’s free-kick from 25 yards was only gathered at the second attempt by Danny Gay.

A poor clearance from Scott Bolderson almost let Chelmsford take the lead and only an excellent save from Chris Tardif saved the day.

However, from the resultant corner Chelmsford took the lead after 37 minutes when home skipper Andy DUNCAN glanced the ball in from under the bar.

Bognor swept upfield from the kick-off and immediately forced a corner. But McDonald’s goal-bound effort was cleared off the line.

CHELMSFORD 1 HT

BOGNOR REGIS 0

Joe Gatting again benefited from Alex Fisher’s excellent pass but although through on the keeper, failed to trouble him with a weak shot.

Bognor were at times playing some excellent flowing football and Carl Pettifer and Danny Smith created another excellent chance which Gatting wasted.

Against the run of play Chelmsford created their second goal when Bertie BRAYLEY nodded in after 56 minutes from an inch-perfect cross from Ricky Holmes.

McDonald was sensationally sent off late on, presumably for saying something to the linesman.

This was another disappointing performance by the Rocks, despite at times showing they can play the attractive football they used to be renown for.

Bognor: Tardif, Jackson, Balderson, Pearce, Jupp, MacDonald, Hinshelwood, Smith, Gatting, Fisher, Pettefer.

Subs: Harris, Ewruje, Burke, Lester, Whisken.

Well according to some knob I spoke to at Withdean on Saturday, he's better than Murray, so i'm guessing some people do still believe it...
Was Muzza really that bad on Saturday to be compared unfavourably to Super Joe ?
