Never heard that one before- why do they say that Voroshilov?

Certain fans groups play up the supposed Catholic, Irish following of club. A few years ago when the possiblity of Man U, Arsenal etc leaving the Premiership and joining a european elite league was being talked about one of the criticisms was it would remove the clubs from there traditions in english football. It was seriously suggested (by some fans) that this wouldn't effect Man U as they weren't really an English club but some sort of International side.

It's part of the self mythologising bullshit that surrounds the club. All that theatre of dreams crap.

It was an example MORON I couldn't be arsed to list every European country :dunce:

Thanks. Was there any need to call me a moron? Why didn't you just explain yourself like you did above?

So anyone who thinks slightly different to you is 'very, very small minded' or a 'moron'?

I dislike Man U and this doesn't change when they play a team away from our shores, If anything, it makes me want them to lose even more.

Xenophobia abounds.

Manchester is a great English city and should have a team playing well in Europe of which we can be proud. The fact that most of their players are not english diminishes that sense of pride. the fact that they are still carrying an air of arrogance from past achievements has 2 results. One is that we enjoy seeing them slip up, the other is that we identify less with any future achievements.
My advice to the purple faced one would be to bring in another crop of good british youngsters and lose the arrogance. Then we can all happily cheer them on in Europe as our representatives.

See your point, mate, but it'd still be really tough to cheer them on in any tournament.

I think the (youth) team of 92 was a fluke and won't happen again for quite some time (here's hoping).

If won't happen now because they have had success. They had nothing to lose throwing the kids in in 92 as they hadn't won anything of note. The pressure now is to sustain it and so they have to buy in big name players to stay at the top. It won't leave room for the youngsters, anymore than it does at Arsenal or chelsea.

Why would any Brit want to see a Spanish or an Italian club beat a Premiership club? The ONLY exception to this would be CPFC, but certainly not Man Utd, a team from the North of the nation with whom we have no rivalry.
Well I want Deportivo or Bayern Leverkusen to beat ANY British-based team - with the exception of Brighton. The reason? I like looking at clubs that we could emulate. We'll never be as big as Man U; no one is ever going to say the biggest clubs in Europe are Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Brighton - but matching Leverkusen (capacity 25,000) is something we could aspire to.

The big clubs established the premier league and took nearly all the TV money for themselves. Fair enough, business and all that. But for me supporting them in Europe is like a woman dating a man who raped her. (Ok, that's a bit OTT but I can't think of another metaphor right now).

If it were like the 'old days' and Man U, etc were 95-100% British Isles players then I'd support them

I should add that I DON'T hate Man U, I really am neutral - but I was supporting Lyon last night.

The polls today suggest that most voters prefer to support a team that is over 80% foreign and never won the European Cup than a team that, historically, has been at least 50% British and succesful in Europe throughout recent years.

Interesting logic...
