I find it sad when I see manufacturing companies going down the pan

Agree. I read an article by Larry Elliot last week. Germany's economy is doing very well relative to itself and also relative to the rest of the West. Luck? No, where the Brits like a cheap and quick fix our Teutonic friends embarked on a long term programme of hard work, educating the work force, manufacturing quality items and focusing heavily on after-sales service. Also, instead of moaning about the growing competition from Asian countries and markets Germany decided to sell them the capital goods e.g. machine tools to aid and benefit the growth.

Why don't we do this?

I find it sad when I see manufacturing companies going down the pan. Company in Peacehaven I know looks to be struggling. These type of jobs are very important for our economy, more important than any job in the finance industry.
...
A country is known for the products they manufacturer, not bloody financial products where the beneficiary is the single company. When you manufacturer goods you also involve other companies who supply the parts which creates more jobs.

its "not a them and us" issue, without finance there would be no manufactoring, which requires a great deal of capital investment. you rely on the finance industry, though banking, insurance, pensions, just as much as you do manufactoring or agricultral for your needs. currently, this country is known for a range of products, financial ones, and is a world leader. It would be great if we could have a better manufactoring base too, but we dont for many reasons. no reason to piss on what we are still good at.

Fair enough, but there is huge imbalance in our economy. We make f*** all. And all people want to buy is piles and piles of cheap imported tat.

Well walkers is owned by Frito Lay which inturn Frito Lay is owned by Pepsi. Also We are the only country who call them walkers. Everywhere else it's Lays

which just goes to show how Johnny Foreigner Is Yet Again Wrong.

Still funny names for familiar products keep school trips to Dieppe amused until its time to buy bangers and flick knives.

Having worked in Engineering as a Trainee Toolmaker and CNC programmer, its sad to see the lack of respect for these sorts of trades. I lost my job twice in manufacturing due to other companies shipping the jobs abroad because it was cheaper. I agree that in Germany manufacturers have a lot of respect and produce quality products and they are proud of it, so why can they do it and we can't?

I cannot think of one thing we produce apart from Rolls Royce engines for planes, that have not been shipped to other countries. Dyson, gone. Please correct me if I am wrong, Rolls Royce cars gone and built in Germany? Range Rover gone and built in Germany?

Yes we may have the best financial products, but how many other companies are involved in creating a financial product. When you build / manufacturer a product you need parts, and these parts come from other companies which means jobs.

I don't think it is possible to buy a pair of trainers that were made in the UK
My Nike's are from Vietnam
My Puma's from China

I hear Britsh bananas are in short supply too?

Personally I make a price v quality [aka value for money] assessment - I don't give a monkey's where it was made.

My bad?

RR have big jet engine assembly plants in Indinapolis and Singapore - I thought the RR Motorcar factory was based near Goodwood somewhere - did it relocate?

Get most of my food from M&S and Tescos.. ..Cant say im particularly bothered where it comes from. A lot of European people like to buy high end British goods.. but our food isnt really known as quality produce outside of England.
