I hope the answer's 'No'. A full-time scout would be a complete waste of money as he (or she) could only watch one game at a time. The current system is fine, there are people working for the club (not sure if they're paid or not) who keep tabs on all the Junior teams in catchment area and inform the club of all the promising youngsters.

Why need scouts? Just play abit of CM4 and you'll find all the decent players in the league

Don't think SC would agree with you. I recall him being very suprised, when he joined, that a 1st div team did not have a scout. Ok we're 2nd div but that shouldn't make a difference.
having a knowledgable scout with contacts can only benefit a club
with no money, like Brighton.

We should be looking outside our catchment area for young players and if we only have unpaid mates who watch the occasional game it's not very professional. Could explain why we seldom seem to bring in young higher division fringe players on loan. Knight being the exception and possibly Henderson.

We need scouts with contacts, whether on a full time basis or not is debatable.
Do we have any??

The fact that he picked up on Knight is testimony to that. His limitation is the wages bill

Icy - I may be wrong but I don't think under FA rules we're allowed to approach boys who live more than 90 minutes away from a Centre of Excellence (Desert Orchid may be able to correct me). And it isn't 'unpaid mates' but people who have a knowledge of the local youth football scene. At my son's club when they were playing at under-9 level 3 boys were approaced by the Albion. One signed for the Centre of Excellence, one declined [because he preferred to go to Cubs on Monday nights!] and one decided to go to Portsmouth instead. They picked the right boys as well as they'd watched them for a while, these weren't just players who'd had a good game when 'the scout' was there.

I don't know what the situation is with boys who've slipped through the net ina another area and are now playing non-league in somewhere like Nottingham.

We have a computer which has every single player registered, even kids on it. Scouts watch update and thats what we use. Just thought you might want to know

Nottingham Forest have just picked up a young lad from a small town nearby here in Limerick. Reading the local papers here there is a young lad who is the first from the town to represent Ireland at any level. I know many youngsters never develop into decent pro's but should I mail the club with his name? has anyone ever done this and had a response?

Maybe I wasn't clear with the original question, I was thinking more of a scout/scouts who cover all age groups including non league and league clubs. Up and coming players in bigger teams reserves in particular. Seems logical to me, but then I know nothing about how a football club is run, so I could be talking out of my *rse

Under-9 to under-12: No club can make an approach if the player lives more than an hour away from the Centre of Excellence or Academy.

Under-13 to under-16: No club can make an approach if the player lives more than an hour and a half away from the Centre of Excellence or Academy.

Even if the club is within the travelling limit, it will still be breaking the rules if the player is registered with another club.

An hour and a half? Surely they need to specify the means of measurement more specifically than that.

I mean.... is it an hour and a half in a Lada Riva (which will mean about ten miles) or
a Saturn V Rocket (whcih will mean about 100,000 miles)
